How Many Quilts?

Susan mentioned how many quilts she makes in a year.

I make far fewer. So far in 2006 I have finished 3

So....

How many quilts do you average a year?

How many quilts have you finished so far in 2006?

And yes, professional quilters/longarmers...I mean how many of your own quilts whether to keep or sell (not quilted for someone else) :-)

This year, I have finished 2 quilts so far (1 twin, 1 baby).

I'm also in two swap requiring regular production of blocks!

I'm also working on two other quilts, one which is going to be finished later this year, and one (a DJ) which is a long term project.

Beats me -- I don't count them up

Four of the "finished in 2006" were started well before 2006 and only needed minor work (like binding) to finish. I've finished five others that were mostly constructed this year. Two of those were smaller than 10" x 15", another was 18" x 24", the last two were about 54" x 60" (quickie rail fence charity quilts). Plus a couple dozen postcards. This has been an especially productive year for me, largely due to the week long retreat I attended. Some years I only finish one or two quilts all year.

I've finished only one this year, and that was a table runner (unless a hug quilt counts, and then it's two finishes this year). I probably finish only one full-size quilt a year on average, and I don't see that changing much until retirement day gets here!

workin on catchin up on the finishing some though. should help when the kids are ALL in school this fall.

That varies from year to year, depending, at least in part, on how big the quilts are and whether I am machine or hand quilting. I probably average close to one a month.

So far I have made -- start to finish -- 3 lap size quilts and 1 baby quilt. I have also sashed and quilted 2 block-of-the-month quilts from last year, and I quilted one small top made a couple years ago. I also quilted 2 queen-size tops made in previous years. (All quilting was done by machine.) I have also pieced 2 more lap quilts, but haven't quilted them yet.

snip.

You are still way ahead of me. I am working on two, but only one has half a chance of getting finished this year. I've got three others in bags too. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I've been thinking on this... and for me it varies greatly year to year on what is going on in life. The first 2 years of DD's life... NOTHING got done. During Y2K when I was without child and hubby worked long hours... lots got done. This year, since I've started machine quilting instead of handquilting, more getting done, but still... I think it varies a lot on size, style of piecing/quilting, do you do your own quilting or send it out etc. This year I've done enough to loose count on. I have declared June Quiting Retreat Month here since hubby is traveling most of the month. Everyone is welcome to stop by and quilt I am currently working on the Sunflower Quilt that everyone was so kind with helping me with my yellow quest on. Technically that was pieced last year.... will be finished this year. Many wall hangings and baby quilts done.

Average? One. I have many projects going at once, often and do other hobbies too.

Completely? One. And I have two more tops done! Which is a record for me. Also, one is in the piecing process.

I don't have a clue! But I tend to make several -- two or three are usually the results of classes at quilt camp. Last year, I made 11 , but most of them were quite small.

So far, I've finished five, but one doesn't really count, since I'd finished Out of Darkness a couple of years ago and it had been at my friend's for long-arm quilting for the rest of the time. Another was a quilt circle project that I'm not happy with, one was a very small trapunto piece from a class here, and one was from a panel I bought. Only one was a design-it-sweat-over-the-setting-cut-lots-of-pieces-finish-it quilt.

About 15. They are all about 36x36, though, for new babies.

I keep a list of what I make in a spreadsheet. That includes non-quilty things, too.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I've made 18 in the last 2 years, but I was unable to sew for 6 months because of my hip injury. Plus a vest, a wallhanging, a jumper, a couple of needlework projects. My husband is starting to complain about quilts falling out of the closets. :D

I've gotten 3 finished since April, when I started feeling recovered enough from surgery to sit at the sewing machine (before that it was too painful to sit long enough to sew). I'm working on a bag at the moment, when I'm finished with that I've got 3 finished tops to quilt up in addition to the celtic knot top that I'm not ready to quilt because I want it to be perfect. :-D

1 twin size quilt, 1 baby quilt and 1 wall hanging -- all started and finished this year. Also 2 twin size quilts started (about 25% each) just before the winter holidays in 2005 then set aside until 2006 had begun, finished in 2006.

The ones in my head don't count.

Thus far in 2006, I've finished 9: of those, one is a queen-sized begun in

2005; one is the balloon "cheater" I machine quilted for my granddaughter; one is the fish quilt for which I only had to add paper-piece borders and quilt. Another is a wall hanging using a sample block for the Shepherd's Light series on my website.

Others range from crib to single bed size and are group projects I quilted and bound as well as contributed blocks for: 3 Roman stripe quilts and one Irish chain. All of these are destined for a recovery and retreat centre on Vancouver Island's west coast.

In 2005, I finished 18 quilts, ranging from a small pillow and a Christmas stocking to queen sized plus a couple of large quilts I quilted for other people. Of my quilts, 5 went to charity

In 2004, I finished 20 quilts, of which 5 went to Kenya for AIDS orphans.

I keep a spreadsheet of my completed projects, noting the name of the recipient, the date finished, whether I used fabric from my stash, whether the project is a UFO [and for how long it's been waiting finishing] and a basic description. It's encouraging to look back and see that I have accomplished something over the years. On the other hand, the To Do spreadsheet has 21 items still to be completed!

I like the spreadsheet idea. Since I'm a rabid starter, maybe seeing the projects before me on the spreadsheet (instead of buried in the closet) would give me more impetus to finish them. Or at least, I can see how productive I am about starting projects. ;-)

I have completed 5 tops and 2 complete quilts so far this year...the most recent quilt was completed last night. I haven't uploaded a picture to webshots yet. Difficult to come up with an average since I've only been quilting just over 2 years. The first year I did a lot because I wasn't working. Since I had to go back to work, I've made much fewer.

Work sure interferes with my quilting time, too! LOL

On Fri, 02 Jun 2006 09:01:19 -0700, Marcella Peek asked:

This seems to be directly related to how many of my friends give birth in a particular year. I have done quilts which are larger than a baby quilt, and I have done wallhangings, but there is nothing like a deadline to get me motivated! Recently 3 of my friends had babies... and a coworker is due in August. Am I done with these 3 quilts yet? Sadly, no, but I do work on them when I get a moment.

I haven't finished any quilts this year, but I am piecing like mad whenever I get a spare moment.

Real downer, isn't it. I just checked and I have 6 quilts basted and waiting, at least 11 tops done, 2 tops almost done, blocks from 7 swaps/classes in bags, and fabric pulled for at least 2 more tops.
