I don't like this one little bit

Ok, I put on my big girl pants and upgraded(ha!) to Windows 7 and you know? I think I'm ok with this. I mean, I haven't really been happy since DOS 5, but this is way better imvho, than Vista and I'm dealing, you know? I'm transferring files over to the new computer and transferring music and audiobooks to iTunes is actually an easier process.

But - I don't like Windows "Live" mail and I will never like Windows "Live" mail. It's awkward and unwieldy and it just looks yucky.

I've put myself on no mail on most of my Yahoo groups because apparently, there is no way to set up "rules" by which the different group emails go in to the folders I set up for them. I can drag them into a folder after they are downloaded but they won't just behave and go by themselves.

Stuff is going into the Spam file that never did before and I'm afraid I'm going to miss a big sale or something and this just isn't right, you know?

But I'll get used to it.

This computer is wicked fast. I forget how fast they fly when they're new.

Cindy, I have been getting spam emails from tele flora- with a space. I'm quite sure they are intentionally using a variation of your screen name and they got my email addy from rctq. I check every time to be sure it's not you before deleting. I wonder if anybody else is getting these emails?

Have a blast with that new 'puter- how cool! I'm glad to hear Windows 7 is good- altho I really don't mind using Vista.

I cant wait to install 7! Vista is laggy and buggy and I never really did like it but it came with my new system 6 months ago so that is what I use. My son has 7 and is loving it, and he said it actually sped up his laptop when he got rid of Vista.

I agree completely about Windows Live Mail. It's clucky and horrible! I also get an error message asking me if I want to report it to Microsoft every single time I close it. I have XP but downloaded it when Microsoft changed the Hotmail format and I could no longer get my email in Outlook Express. I switched back to OE and just use WLM for my hotmail accounts.

When I do finally get a new computer with Windows 7 I'll switch to Thunderbird for email. I will not use WLM!

Did they change Windows Mail from Vista to 7? I have no problems with it... and have many rules set up to automatically deposit new mail in specific folders.

I also use it for reading Newsgroups -- including RCTQ!!

It must have changed.... for me -- it was a very mild change from Outlook Express.

What were you using on your old computer?

If you don't like Windows mail, try Mozilla Thunderbird. I've never used Windows mail. I used to use Netscape but have been using Mozilla Thunderbird for quite a while.

Yes. The Windows Mail in Vista is a different program than Windows Live Mail in 7. And I agree, WLM is basically the pits. I tried Thunderbird and found it to be the pits as well, and did not find any good alternatives.

Very cool about your new computer Cindy!

As for yahoo, I've got email from my yahoo groups filtering into different folders. In fact today, I just set one for my Juki related emails. I just made a Juki folder, then went to mail options, added a new filter that is set so that when the subject is [TL98EJuki], it goes into the Juki folder.

I know you're probably familiar with this and I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but I mention it because I sometimes miss things that are very obvious to others! :-)

Duh! On my part. I just realized you meant you were receiving yahoo groups email (or in your case not receiving email) in Windows Live. I use yahoo for my email and what I just wrote to you was for yahoo.

See, I told you that I miss things that are obvious to everyone else! :-)

Ha! I knew what you meant, Michelle.

Yeah, that's the problem. There doesn't appear to be any tools for this Live Mail ... stuff.

I've got a Yahoo address and a Hotmail one. I don't want to use them as my primary mail reader because the ads are so distracting.

I'll get used to it. I will, I will!

Getting a new computer stopped being exciting about 5 computers ago, Michelle.

Now it's just a newer hammer. And I've spent the whole weekend trying to get all my stuff loaded correctly. Took DH and myself all day yesterday just to load Office. And we've done it many, many times before. Turns out this computer is 64 bit instead of 32 bit and that makes a difference. Who knew?

The only thing I'm real excited about is the USB ports built into the monitor. That's going to make a difference. I don't have to stoop over and try to fumble with Flash Drives.

In Windows Live Mail you can do filtering through Tools, Message Rules. This is similar to what you can do with Outlook.

HA! Getting a new computer is still exciting to me because I usually wait until they're really old. The one I have now is 5 or 6 years old. It was Windows XP which I like. So when I upgrade and the computer is faster and has cool things like a USB port in the monitor, I have lots of fun. :-)

I think it depends on how and when you upgrade, and what you upgrade to. I am waiting for my RAM stick and my video board to come in (backordered). When they do, DH and I get to put the boards in the box. Whereupon I will have upgraded to a system that is a little hotter than the Dell Studio 9000, and only cost about $300. Then I load the Karmic Koala onboard (latest version of linux Ubuntu), and I am ready to roll. I haven't been very happy with the Windows upgrades. There is this little section of my brain that goes into convulsions at the idea of an operating system that takes up most of your resident memory, and in my case costs as much or more than the hardware.

Yes I am excited about this. This will be replaceing the machine I am currently working on, an HP Celeron loaded with win ME. The ME machine cannot navigate most of the web these days.

Oh! I did I did! Oh, that was retorical wasn't it?

Changing my OS means I have to find a new newsreader (Pan is looking good), but the other new software and all is no big deal since DH switched to linux long since and can direct me to the necessaries easily. Since linux=free there is no further damage to my wallet either.

More usb ports is always good.

We are contemplating a usb hub at my house. I keep saying that no matter how many you have you always need another, but nobody listens to that.

DD crows about the fact that her most recent Mac upgrade has a smaller footprint than the older version.

Yeah, but I could have used a bit of your rhetoric yesterday! :-)

Whatever you find has got to be better than Windows "Live".

It's like closets or cabinet space. I'll expand to fit the availability.

I think that's a Law.

OK, this is the first time I've seen that toolbar. Where was it hiding and how did you make it appear.

It's all there. My precious.

I'm BACK, BABY!

My computer at work has those USB ports on the edge of the monitor, too. Very handy! I use them all the time.

Mine is 7 years old...and sometime last fall the CD drives decided to stop working. :-(

The plan is to buy one of the computers the high school's "A+ Computer Repair" class is building, later this spring. :-)

My CD drive went kaputt too--a couple of years ago. I've never had one do that before. They've always lasted as long as the computer. I've got an external drive now, but it's a lot more finicky.

Best regards, Michelle > Mine is 7 years old...and sometime last fall the CD drives decided to stop
