I got feedsack/flour sack fabric!

Mom again has bestowed some things of my Grandma's on me. I have absolutely no idea what to do with it or even if I should make anything from it. Have a peek and tell me what you think, oh gurus of antique textiles! They are the first four pics at the top.

's theory is that the stuff with what appears to balconies/fire escapes (2nd from left in group pic) and the cars are maybe feedsacks (slightly rougher texture/weave) and the floral and the yellow wreaths are flour sack (a little finer in texture). I have no clue at all.

If they are vintage flour / feed sacks.... they may have some value to them (as in $$$$) not just sentimental. I would do a little homework before I let them go too quickly. You might want to check ebay searching for feed sacks or flour sacks and see if you see anything similar!

Debi - You lucky, lucky girl!!! They are all quite charming. Can you see a name stamped in any of the seams or borders? Might be worth taking to your LQS and asking someone to have a look. They would look really great with some 30's fabric..... please let us know what you find out.

Good idea Kate. I know that Grandma had them for years. Mom said she'd go with Grampa to the feed store and tell him which sacks to buy!

Hey Patti! Except for the floral roses, they are all printed selvedge to selvedge, no writing or text of any kind. You can still see the stitching holes where the sacks were taken apart. And they smell of cedar chest...I love that smell, even though I know it's bad to store stuff in them long term. Good idea to check though. Wish I knew more...

Thanks Teri! I think that is the cutest one. I'm still not sure what the structures are on that other one... balconies, fire escapes?

Fire escapes. Mom had a bit of that fabric when I was little and said it reminded her of when she lived in Chicago--she would sit on hers and her friend across the way would sit on hers and they would exchange gossip. That gal turned out to be Mom's best friend until the day the friend passed away and then the Mr. wrote Mom.

Wow you have me thinking, I didn't know it was bad to store stuff in a cedar chest for a long time, may I ask why? I have "inherited" two cedar chests, well who knows who will end up with them but I bet I do, anyway, some of the stuff in them has been there for I bet 40 or more years. You know things like the dresses we girls were baptized in as infants, and things such as that, now what do I do with those items if they can't stay in chest? I actually thought cedar chests were for long term storage.

There's something about the oils/acids in the wood that can make fabric deteriorate more quickly. I don't remember exactly what it is, I'm sure someone else here can say it with more clarity than I can. It's early yet and I haven't had coffee.;-)
