I won a ribbon, but.....

I won a second place ribbon for a miniature quilt I made for our quilt show last weekend. That's the good news. The bad news is they sold my mini quilt. It is a mini quilt auction, but in the past, they did not sell the minis that won ribbons without asking. I was unable to attend the show, and I assumed that I would get it back. I called the lady who purchased it, and explained to her that I had never won a ribbon, and could I pay her what she had paid for it, or I would even make her another one. She very rudely told me that she hated the color of the binding on the quilt, thought it was an awful color, and she had changed it. She then told me to make myself another one, and hung up on me. I am making myself another one. I talked to the lady in charge of the auction, and she said she was sorry that the mini had been sold, but that I had not told her not to sell any of the ones I made if they won a ribbon. It was my fault since I assumed the rules had not changed. Oh well, that's another lesson learned.

Well now if that don't beat all.

"I hate your work, that's why I bought it, and no, you can't buy it back."

I'd say fair bet that anybody who thinks *that* is a sane and logical position has got far worse problems that the color of the binding.

Congratulations on the ribbon!

Who knew maniacs bought quilts? I'm so sorry you lost your quilt. Not much else to say that I really should say. I'm looking forward to seeing the one you're making for yourself.

I cannot help thinking, If she didn't like it, why the hell did she buy it?

It sounds lovey to me.

And congratulations on the ribbon.

Oh gosh Sherry, excuse me for saying so, but what a bi*ch! She could still have refused AND been polite about it. Some people just astound me.

Anyway, many congrats on the awesome win! I'm sorry the rules changed and your ribbon winning quilt got away. (I'm afraid I would have assumed the rules were the same from one year to the next as well.) Did you happen to get a picture of it? I'd love to see it.

Best regards, Michelle in Nevada, USA

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it. It is a redwork pattern of an angel, but I did it in lots of colors. I have already traced it on my fabric, and I looked to make sure I still have the same backing and binding that I used on the other one. It won't quite be the same, but it will do.

Unbelievable. Hrmph.

Congratulations on the win!

I wonder whether anyone you might reach took a picture of it. Actually, that would be a good thing for the show officials to do, at least for all the winning quilts.

holy smokes. if that RUDE lady changed the binding she must be a quilter. i never knew another quilter could be so cruel when it comes to quilts. other things maybe but quilts? how RUDE!!! not to worry, she'll get her comeuppance one day. i hope ya got a pix of it so we can drool over it. i still cant believe someone would change perfectly good and essentially new binding for the colour. how weird is that. Congrats on the second place ribbon. you did good and sadly that RUDE lady did not do good. j.

Oh, Sherry, how awful for you! Not only to have the quilt sold unexpectedly, but to such a rude woman!

Good thinking, Heidi. It's just very possible that someone at the quilt auction did makes pictures of Sherry's quilt. I was too busy being indignant that I didn't think of that. Polly

Hi Sherry,

CONGRATULATIONS. Very pleased you won a ribbon - I would be so pleased with myself if I won anything.

As for that rude, insulting excuse for a woman, she will get what's coming to her. She may have got the quilt, which she didn't really like or deserve, but you won the accolades and the ribbon.

Please check with the show committee, someone may have taken a picture of the prize winners then you could frame your ribbon and the picture together.

Well, this is a wake up call for all of us to carefully read the fine print when submitting quilts to contests, shows or other exhibits. Enjoy the journey of making the quilt again, Sherry, but be sure to add something to make it a bit different from the first. That way yours will be unique! PAT

Now that Sherry's mentioned it, it seems that I read the rules in a quilt competition where the winning quilts became the property of the sponsors. That would be over my dead body - not that I feel strongly about it. Yes, indeed, read the fine print. Polly

I think that is usually only when the winner accepts prize money?

But yes, it is a warning to read the rules - every year. We had some changes made to the upper size limit of miniature quilts between one show and the next - could have had me disqualified >gNow that Sherry's mentioned it, it seems that I read the rules in a quilt
