Invisible zipper help!

I bought a couple invisible zippers for a project. On the zipper package it says to buy the Coats and Clark special foot for inserting them. As far as I can tell, none of the shanks fit my Bernina 180. Any ideas? The foot is supposed to groove with the zipper so it sews very close to the teeth as I understand it. This is this afternoon's project (instead of ironing dress shirts)...I'll have to do the ironing if I can't figure this out! Help!

There is a Bernina adapter that will allow you to probably use the foot made for the low shank (SInger type) foot. If you have an old basic backup machine around it probably takes a more standard foot you will find in the package of invisible zipper feet. If I remember right a variety of invisible zipper feet coming in one little blister pack. I think my Bernina adaptor came from Clothilde years ago.

I found my adaptor and that's what I think will fit the zipper foot. Now if I can just channel some good vibes to put this in correctly. Not only is it my first invisible zipper...it's going in Minkee! Sheesh.

Oh my goodness, Kathyl, you've wandered into some complicated territory. I have a generic invisible zipper foot and I have several adaptor shanks but the shanks do not fit my Bernina 155. (They do fit the older Bernina.) Since the urge to insert an invisible zipper hasn't struck me, that's a problem I haven't solved. I hauled out volume 1 of my Bernina Feetures instructions and it says you can buy Invisible Zipper Foot #35. I don't know how you're going to use it if it's invisible. Polly

I don't know for sure, but many sm now have a foot with a groove going down the middle so if you are sewing on piping it slides right through the groove. That might work pretty good.

for inserting zippers in any stretchy fabrics, Wonder Tape is great. Wonder Tape is double sided tape, designed to be sewn through and it washes out. If you don't have any on hand, try using any water soluble glue and glue the zipper in first. then sew it.

I ended up using a fabric glue stick to hold it in. One of the problems was that this was sewn on a curved piece so it was hard to keep the zipper on the necessary line. And the directions on the zipper package were for the top of a skirt or pants and this one was being sewn so it would be the opening to put a pillow form in. Hummm, does that make any sense? I basically made a cover for a "Boppy" type pillow.

I found a place to order a bunch of the pillow forms fairly cheap and thought I'd make a cover for one with the leftovers from this project.

Here's the finished project.

It could fit a little bit better, but not bad for the first try. I think I can improve. These are very popular baby shower gifts right now. So I think making one to match a baby quilt would be great!

If you happen to have a 3-groove pintuck foot, that often makes short work of invisible zippers.

I've never found the concealed zip foot at all helpful, and don't use it. If you'd like a copy of a YKK concealed zip insertion instruction leaflet, I can buzz you a copy. Let me know, with valid email addy...

Ditto on the foot.

No matter the foot, I still tend to baste the opening, line up and pin the zip, masking tape the teeth, and sew along the masking tape. With an invisable zip it really doesn't matter as much about the foot because the teeth don't get in the way as much. Any old zipper foot or narrow foot should work fine.

Thanks. I got the packaged zipper foot to work for me. My best trick was to use fabric glue to "baste" the zipper in before stitching. I still get a little confused as to what to do at the top and bottom...but I just winged it and it looked fine.

I'm not sure what sort of buttonhole foot the Bernina has, but I can use my buttonhole foot, with a groove on the bottom. A piping foot might work too.

I've also been told that foot #35 is the invisible zipper foot. I'll have to check my foot stash to see if I've got that one.
