Ironing Board Help

I need a sturdy ironing board. I do not want the big board. I have tried those, and don't like it. I need something that will be sturdy on thick carpet. DH & I had all our flooring replaced last year. I didn't want carpet in any room, and he wanted it in all the bedrooms and the den. We have laminate flooring in the hall and kitchen, and stone tile in the entry. The difference in price between all laminate everywhere, and carpeting in the bedrooms and den was a very significant amount of $6,000. The only bedroom that is a true bedroom is our master bedroom. One of the other bedrooms is my computer room/office, and the other one is my sewing room. It does have a couch that folds out to a queen size bed. Anyway, my Wal-Mart ironing board is not very steady in my sewing room. I am afraid that it will tip over. Does anyone have a favorite brand of ironing board?

After buying and discarding a couple different ones I ended up with the Polder tri-leg ironing board. I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond.

It's the most sturdy that I could find. I have carpet in my sewing room and don't have a problem. I love that I can set it up HIGH, well, higher than the standard ironing board which I find too short.

I dremmeled off the iron holder so I can't comment on whether that is a good feature or not. I had to in order to screw my big board to it permanently. Love that.

My ironing board is a Rid-Jid brand. I got it for a bridal shower gift

40 years ago. It is nice and sturdy, much better than a cheap one I bought 20 years or so ago. I don't know if Rid-Jid boards are still around, though you might find one at Goodwill or at a yard sale. Check the more expensive boards at someplace like Bed, Bath, and Beyond. If at all possible set up a board before buying to see how stable it is.

Hi Sherry,

I wanted a very sturdy ironing board because I do not like my iron falling off. One of the worse thing in a sewing room is a wobbly ironing board. I hate it. I found one of the Rid Jid wooden ironing boards. It has black legs and is a dream to iron on.

Another tip, a wool army blanket for the padding. It lets the steam breath through and really lets you set a crisp crease in sleeves and pant legs.

This is what works for me,

The most stable will be those with three or four legs, not "T legs". I haven't seen a modern board I liked for less than $$$$, so I'd suggest hitting the estate sales for one from the 1950s.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not that concerned about the price. I do like the Rowenta ironing boards I have online, so I will check those out. If I can find a RidJid, I will check it out. I actually have a wooden ironing board in my garage that was my Mother's. She has been gone for 42 years, and I don't remember her having any other ironing board. I have used it in the past, but it wasn't sturdy on our old carpet so I know it won't work with the new carpet.

I looked all over my 'new' board to try and find the brand name and couldn't! Mine ia a little wider than most boards, has a iron rest built in, and also has a flip up sleave board attachment. What I love about it is it is fantastically sturdy - it has two curved 'L' shapped legs instead of straight, angled legs. It doesn't rock a bit on my carpeted floor. Perhaps someone here will recognize the brand; I have seen them at quilt shows. The best thing about my board was it only cost me $20 as I picked it up at a thrift shop :)

I have a board that fits your description. It is a Polder and I got it at Linens 'n Things. It sells for $69.99 but with a 20% coupon...... If you look at the round rubber thing on the iron rest it should say the brand.....mine does.

I looked at the Polder website after purchasing my board and that model isn't listed so I wonder if it isn't an older model....

It was $30.00 cheaper than the Rowenta board and it's "body" is wider toward the pointy end.....
