Ironing quilt

Can I iron my finished quilt?

There are some larger areas which could do with being ironed.

Will the invisible thread (Sew All) melt if I iron over it?

Many thanks

Susan

I've always followed a rule that you don't iron quilts, but I don't know what happens to them if you do (apart from getting flattened out, obviously). I've also never seen a quilt that looked like it needed ironing, but ifr I did I suppose I'd wash and dry it and see if that helped get rid of any unwanted crinkles.

Again, I've always followed a rule that you don't do that, but I've never put it to the test because it would totally ruin your quilt if it does melt.

Could you perhaps sort of 'hover' the iron over the quilt, with steam, and see if that helps. You might not need to touch the quilt at all. But a sample piece, even so, might be helpful. I don't know whether steam can melt anything on its own? . In message , S R Glickman writes

I iron my quilts. I know the Sulky invisible thread you can iron, but I don't know about the one that you are using.

I iron all my quilts, but I don't use much pressure so they don't get flat. I don't use invisible thread though.

Thank you so much for replying.

I've used Soft & Bright 100% polyester batting .

So I think I'll forget about ironing it !! :))

My daughter will not mind. She's 7 and thrilled with her quilt of doll blocks.

Thanks again

, I have washed it - I think that may have increased the wrinkles:))

Thanks

Had you considered steaming the quilt while it is hanging? That way the hot surface never actually touches the fabrics and threads. Usually works for me.
