King Sized Summer-Weight Quilt finished

My mom and I started this quilt together in the summer of 2007. We'd hoped to have it done by the spring of 2008.... LOL! Well, we're only a year off.

The quilt uses the Oregon Trail block and has a star themed fabric running throughout, so we call it Starry Night on the Oregon Trail. The quilt has no batting, which made it a little different. It was easier to machine quilt that way, but it also came out of the wash wrinklier than a quilt with batting. We're thinking of ironing it. Yikes!

Also learned we needed to pay better attention about cutting the triangles on the bias. We obviously failed to do that with some of them and they stretched, which caused some small puckers. Not too happy about that.

While I always see the flaws, we're pleased to have this giant thing done!

Here's where the picture can be found if you'd like to take a look:

ll, we're only

Love it! Yellow and blue is such a classic combination.

And I love my summer quilts. I sometimes use a layer of thin flannel in between to stabilize the top and bottom. joan

Wow! It's gorgeous! I will get in line behind Mary to iron that pretty thing if you decide you don't want to. I promise that right after ironing I would put it promptly on my bed and cherish it forever.

You do good work. I can't imagine finishing a quilt that size. The sheer scope of the task would overwhelm me. You definitely have my respect and admiration.

Thanks so much Mary. :-) Um...I'm thinking I might just leave it wrinkly. ;-)

Thanks Joan! Yep, blue and yellow is one of my favorite color combinations too. :-) It's the second quilt I've made with those two colors.

If I do another summer quilt, I may try using flannel. The quilt is a nice weight without any batting at all, but did behave differently. I might feel more comfortable with some type of batting.

Oh my goodness, that's quite an opus! And I'll bet NO ONE will see the flaws except you and your mom. So just bask in its sunny colors and the joy of having it done...

Thanks for your kind words, Sunny! This is the 2nd king-sized my mom and I have made together, and the trick is not to think about the whole thing at once. LOL! Actually, initially it starts out to be 4 separate pieces--the top, two sides, and the bottom. It makes it more manageable, at least until the end.

I'm looking forward to getting back to smaller quilts now though!

Thanks so much, Polly!

Hmmm. While I know each of you would give this quilt a good home without a doubt, I just don't think I could trust any of you to iron it and give it back! ;-)

You and Joan are probably right about using the flannel batting; it was kind of weird without any.

You really should try a blue and yellow, Polly. I've seen your work, and it is always w> What a beauty, I love that quilt! I've never done a blue and yellow; no

Thanks Heidi! I'm definitely enjoying having it done, and I'm starting to think of those puckers as "gathers" as if they were a plan. HA! It passes the galloping horse test. :-)
