machine quilting

-------------------------------------

Hi,

I am having trouble machine quilting my son's t-shirt quilts. I have a Bernina 153, with the decorative stitches, but the stitches "skip" every once in awhile. Not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be grateful.

Thanks,

Glenda

Hi Glenda, I know nothing about a Bernina, but if either of my machines (a Pfaff and a Janome) starts skipping stitches I start cleaning. I take out the bobbin case and clean the compartment as well as humanly possible. And any place else I can reach easily. Often a glob of fluff will be under the bobbin causing a skip.

Agree w/Sunny; cleaning is job one. If you haven't already already done so, try a new size 90 needle. It's probably not a tension issue, but it can never hurt to put the bobbin thread through the stitch finger when quilting.

It none of that works, it's down to surgery. Skippings problem are often caused by burrs on the needle, bobbin, or throat plate. Run your finger around the needle opening on the throat plate to feel for burrs. If you feel the slightest snag, take your emery board to it. If not that, it's off the dealer to check for bobbin burrs or timing issues.

Good luck, I can know how frustrating this must be.

Aha. I saw one more thing in Glenda's question - she's doing a t-shirt quilt. Maybe the best needle for that project would be a ballpoint. I've never attempted quilting with a ballpoint needle but they do pretty stitching on knits and it might be worth a try. Polly

That's the first thing I thought of too, Polly.

Good thought. Certainly worth a try before surgery.

I haven't used a ballpoint since the good old days. I put myself thru school making double knit pants suits with princess seam fitting. And that's the closest hint to my age that you're going to get...~:o)

Glenda: If you are following the advice posted here, you are probably ready to do a PRACTICE piece now. Use some parts of the shirts you've cut up, sandwich with a bit of the same batting you have in the quilt, and do some quilting to both check the quality of stitching and to get your rhythm. HTH.
