mixed fabrics - or not?

I finally gave in, I bought the packs of fabric at JoAnns that had been calling my name. Each contains 7 FQs and they are a mixture of textures, both Christmas, one black, white, gold, the other red green gold, on the outside it said 100% cotton, but I really don't believe this, some are really fine gauzy material, others are velour texture. I'm not sure how to handle these, I'm nervous of washing, some look like they might just unravell! But I'm nervous of not washing too.

I'm planning to make little nik naks mostly, maybe some placemats, possibly a wall hanging, but nothing that would be actually used as a quilt.

just use a bucket with a wee bit of soap and mush them around by hand, then rinse and hang'em on the line or over the bath to dry enough til you can press them. i've done that with small pieces and the dont unravel and get washed just as well. you do indeed have to be careful with those packs of stuff from Joanns. the gauzy stuff i'm not sure i'd use that at all for quilting. tho if its pretty, its hard to use for other things. oh dear. maybe folded into a flower for use on a vest that wont get much washing. shrug, beats me what else. jeanne

If they are not needed to be washed in final project why wash now? If it were me I would'nt worry about that, just enjoy making your litle nick nacks!

You could always use a very lightweight iron on interfacing as you'd want it to stay on. I've even done that on 'antique' fabric that was 'for show' in a WUH. Just didn't want it to disintegrate any further. "inch" the amount of heat up on your iron as you don't want to' burn' the fabric..I used just enuf to get a good bond.

I did the same thing about a year ago. I haven't tried to wash them.... the first one I cut into ravelled so badly that I have been afraid to use them for sewing. Instead, they have become glue-on fabric. I've covered a couple little boxes and such. I intended to use them for crazy quilting and maybe i will. But they sure are pretty to look at.
