more quilting observations

I just picked up the new Keepsake Quilting catalogue that came the other day. Anyone have any comments on the quilting done on the front of the thing? It isn't all over meandering but I think that might have been an improvement. I would imagine the front cover of this catalogue should demand a tad more excitement. Taria

Well - I had a different response to it. Bear in mind that I am working on improving my FMQ skills, so I'm taking baby steps when it comes to choosing a design. When I saw the cover, the first thing I thought of was " Hey - I bet I can do that & I could probably add a little circle in the middle of the petals too", so I had a more positive reaction to it. Usually, I look at the FMQ & say, I'll never be able to do that.

But, yes, Taria - it was a very simple design, that probably any beginner could do.

I don't do well with Keepsake, Taria. Most of my buying has to be done online but the Keepsake website's hackles rise when I try to check out. I phoned them and they were very nice and gave me a silly password that may have worked. Honestly, I was too aggravated to try it. There are just so many very nice places that are delighted to take my money that I don't think Keepsake's worth the time-wasting struggle. I expect it's just a personal thing with my email address and their website - but, there I am. Their catalog cover? Yes, it is surprisingly boring but here's a chance to use our new word. It would gitterdun. Polly

I have ordered from Keepsake and had excellent experience with them, but have always called them on the phone -- I never put a credit card number on any web site and I like to talk to a "real person", and they have all been people who really seem to know their stuff and are pleasant and efficient. I am a fan of wholecloth quilting, and about

5 years ago got my first piece from Keepsake just to try the technique

-- a Christmas scalloped edge piece that could be a table cover or a Christmas tree skirt. And the muslin I have ordered from them has been the best quality muslin I have ever found anywhere.

I like the quilting - it says several things to me, 2 of which I think are important if you're a catalog with a kit to sell: 1st, simple is very attractive. 2nd, If I bought the kit, even I could do that!!

I have bought a rare item from them on occasion. I do enjoy their catalogues. I guess that pattern is great for gitterdun on a dragger!

I am trying to gitterdun on a very scrappy (not quite a charm) tumbler quilt. It was cool enough yesterday that we didn't use the AC. Big old breeze came up through the open window and tumblers tumbled everywhere from the design wall. It is a slow WIP at that rate.

Howdy!

Another catalog that showed up this weekend: Connecting Threads; I read it for the patterns. There's one called Diamond Rings that has some...interesting finishes on it.

Those diamonds in between the circles are "tacked" downw/ some pretty nice quilting in the middle, but the edges are loose.I can imagine putting that baby in the wash just oncebefore the edges of those diamond fray and straggle out.? Is it supposed to look unfinished? I dunno'....but I couldn't leave it like that.YMMV
