mostly ot-today

Today was one of the rare days I just needed to get out of the house. I make most efforts to be a hermit but once in awhile I break away. We hit one of the few last antique historic shopping districts here in So.Cal. We walked until we thought we had seen every old thing ever made. Didn't find what I was on the hunt for but had fun looking. Lunch like a tourist over at Knott's Berry Farm and then a dash over to M&L. They were having the last of their SALE! I had forgotten. Looks like their sale prices were more in line with the prices before they went up last year. About 10 yards of assorted pieces came home with me though. They are in the washer now. I probably should be getting some sewing done at some point! Hope everyone can sneak away from the holiday flurry and get some down time too. Taria

Ten yards? Ah, yes. That sounds just right. You failed to mention what you were searching for in the antique district; tell all. We need details, you know. Polly

DH was on the hunt for a Bee Brooch. Long story there. I am on the hunt for a small coffee table. I guess if you don't have room for a standard coffee table you are just not supposed to use one. I was hoping for something kind of fun and funky I could make into one if not find one. I did find a nearly perfect one in size and shape but it had been painted over with flowers. Not my kind of flowers and too pricey to just strip and get rid of. I think we both just like to look at old stuff. Lots of lace and assorted tablecloths and linens out there. That surprised me. A lot less furniture pieces than there used to be. An old average shape Singer 201 for almost $500 but very little other vintage sewing goodies. We are trying to figure out how some of these folks still pay the rent. The hunt is half the fun with old stuff. It was a fun day! Taria

I, also, wanted a small coffee table with a drawer for remotes, etc. for my family room. I found a small vintage desk for $30, refinished it to look aged and distressed and then cut off the legs to the proper height. I like that it has a place on the back to put an artificial plant inside of it, too. It makes me happy.

In my living room I have a small oval vintage coffee table- took a long time to find one. I was told that they were not popular years ago and there aren't many out there.

You'll find something- and you are so right. The hunt is the fun part!

What a great idea! I can NEVER think of things like that, but always love it when someone else does it.

Howdy!

Did just that, today. Took me to see the latest Harry Potter movie (loved it), and enjoyed the big tub of popcorn. ;-D Came home to find the Keepsake Qlts pkg waiting for me; I can't resist their "scrap frenzy" deals, 100 fqs for $100; sure, I have time and space for another 25 yds of assorted fabric. Then I mowed the yard, put up some Charlie Brown & Snoopy décor outside. I love these guys. It's been a busy week of fix and clean. Yesterday I gifted Dan-the-Bug-Man w/ a lap quilt; he's been interested in my quilts and quilting for a number of years, so: using treasures from my stash and the BaseballBallSwap, I picked out a few dozen insect & critter squares; Dan's quilt is called "What's Buggin' You?" Happy Holidays!

R/Sandy - charmed that these BBS squares, at 6 1/2" each, make a quick hst quilt top

My coffee table is made from the drawers of an old treadle sewing machine. The drawers are mounted on a flat slab of oak and topped with another piece of oak. The legs are chunks of the legs of an old oak dining room table. I bought it from an antique dealer that was at our mall 10 or 15 years ago. Like others, I couldn't find a coffee table that wasn't too big; I was on the verge of having one custom made when I found this one. Bonus is the drawer space.
