Need Canada locations help

Ok, so I am sorting out the data in the directory and need some help making sure I keep the locations consistent so all the squishies get where they are going and for the sorters in the group (you know how they like to sort stuff).

I have some locations listed as AB and some Alberta; is BC the same as British Columbia; what does NB and QC stand for. Does it mean something different if initials are used over spelling them out?

Stand by Aussies, your next........

Well, from Canada...

I see that you already have the abreviations sorted out. Wether or not to use them or spell them out really doesn't make a difference, but the Canada Post website says "The province should always be presented using the recognized two-letter symbol. See Table 4: "Canadian Provinces and Territories Names and Abbreviations" for a complete list."

It is also helpful if mail coming from another country, ( and USA is another country) has CANADA in the address on a line by itself as the last part of the address.

Mostly, I'm amazed at the way the mail gets where its going. And yes, I do work for Canada Post part time. It's Canada Customs that really screws things up. We run a small business from home and have had items returned to sender in the US because they did not put CANADA on the address label! It never even made it to our postal system. Anyway the link below should take you to a page that shows pretty much every type of address there is in Canada and all the preferred "rules".

Actually I have usually only heard french speaking people call it kaybeck. There are a few different pronunciations but I think the most common among english speaking Canadians is quh beck. qu beck is also fairly common too.

Tammy, in Ontario, just to the left of quh beck ;)

Morning Jeanne (8:15 am Sunday)

Well, in Alberta the saying goes "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes" Yesterday we were at -37C with a windchill of -46C. This morning we woke up to -23C - no reported windchill. By this afternoon it is supposed to be +1C. Pretty crazy! The good thing is that our really cold spells don't last long. And we seldom go two days in a row without sunshine. We have not had as much snow as we should have this winter, so unless we get some big spring time snow dumps we may have a water shortage this year. Not to the point of having to shower with buckets, tho maybe we should consider that, hmmm.....

I'm with Tammy on pronouncing Quebec. Kay beck is French. Kind of like the name Helen. The French say it more like Hay len.

Mmmm.... coffee is ready. That first cup really helps me to wake up. Any one like a cup?

Marilyn in its warming up and I want to go play outside Alberta, Canada

omg, you are insane with those temps to deal with. brrrrrrrrrr. i cant even imagine those temps.

Quebec is a French name and its mostly filled with French speakers/people iirc, wouldnt they be using the correct pronunciation. seems really strange to me that most folks change the names of other places into their own native tongue. really strange indeed. i've tried to correct myself when i learn what is correct. heck, we've got places here i've yet to get right as there are variations by tribe/iwi. its hard to figure out somedays. i keep plugging away at it tho. :) oh well. jeanne minutes"

I think this will go into my "idea" list for the next Directory. I can use a drop down list so you can choose the location. You have all given me so much good information. Thanks everyone!

Yes, I live in Minnesota -- the northernmost state in the continental U.S. Rochester -- where I live in southern Minnesota -- is actually a bit north of Portland, Maine, and Toronto, Ontario.

QC is the province of Quebec. Quebec is officially Francophone, and as such would never use QC to designate Quebec City: that's only in English. For envelopes, the accepted block form in Canada is:

Name Street or Post office box# City, Province [two-letter designation] postal code

Postal Code is L#L #L# where L=letter, # = number eg: my postal code is V9X 3E1 If there is a lack of space, you can put the postal code on the same line as the City, Province, so long as there is an identifiable space between. Canada Post prefers that postal code be on a separate line to allow the machines to read it more easily. Postal code is more important than Province if you want your mail to get to the right place: [V = British Columbia.] You can look up Canadian Postal codes here:

The accepted provincial Postal abbreviations are: Alberta AB British Columbia BC Manitoba MB New Brunswick NB Newfoundland and Labrador NL Northwest Territories NT Nova Scotia NS Nunavut NU Ontario ON Prince Edward Island PE Quebec QC Saskatchewan SK Yukon YT

There....more than you ever wanted to know about Canada's mail system;

That would be Ville de Québec, not QC or Quebec City, although some Anglophones do call it Quebec City. Never seen QC used as an abbreviation for the city.

CA is a state code, it's NOT an acceptable postal abbreviation for Canada. [CA is the internet code for Canada.] And no, despite how our neighbours to the south occasionally treat us, we are a sovereign country of our own, and not a state. And no, we don't want to be a state, even if we do allow the US to borrow most of their comedians from us. Given the way the US election looks like it may go, some of the US may decide to join Canada, though.

Well, after all the entries to this thread, I am going to blame any errors in the Canadian addresses in the Directory now in progress to jet lag from my trip to California. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Great - now I really know! Thanks Julia.

For two years, I lived in the *southernmost* point of Canada! - just across the border bridge from Port Huron, Michigan! . In message , Julia in MN writes
