need help finding scrappy pics

A lady in the workroom at school is wanting to quilt. I gave her a bunch of stuff to start her off. She wants to do a scrappy quilt with cotton clothes and some other cottons to balance it. Doesn't want a "plan" (like a 9 patch with light and dark...) just wants it scrappy. I told her that is fine. Told her how to make a flannel/felt wall to put up the blocks and work out her design. But everything she is reading says "use a pattern, buy my pattern, pattern pattern pattern...." so she is getting cold feet.

I found the RCTQ members gallery

but don't have the time to figure out who does scrappy (true scrappy) quilts to show her some samples...

Can some of you email me links or tell me which members' sites to show to her?

oh... and i am on comcast, so may have to use Google after tomorrow to get to this, but I will look for your replies...

might give her my patterns for these

but they have triangles and I don't know how comfortable she'd be with that... THANKS!

Quiltville is a great site for scrappy Kellie. I suppose they are patterns, but not that much! She could always join squares together or triangles to be a little different?

What about a postage stamp quilt? . In message , Kellie J Berger writes

How does she feel about triangles or appliqué? I've started some scrappy blocks recently and am loving it, especially the appliqué flower. Much more simple than I thought it would be.

Howdy!

Just cut some squares (3" is good) and start sewing them together. Or cut the squares in half to play mix-&-match triangles. Or combine squares and rectangles. Start sewing:

Cut strips & mix 'em up:

This method used a foundation, which I don't. Whatever works. Just Can't Cut It has a pattern, but is it necessary? I've seen this kind of scrappy quilt for years; very simple to arrange the pieces in any color combinations.

Good luck!

Kelli, I love to freehand scrappies. Take a look at these blocks on my webshots page under scrappy happy: ttp://entertainment.webshots.com/album/59312286wKykfF All I did was cut a piece of fabric, not fussy about size, shape, etc., then sewed on another piece and trimmed it, not worrying about straight seams, etc., and kept going until they were anywhere from 12 - 20 or so inches and then after I had a pile of those I just sewed them together not worrying about where or what or how....the final product turned out beautiful! Kind of a freehand log cabin I guess. It was fun and fast and easy. I trimmed the outer edges as straight as I could and then brought the backing around to the front to bind. She could even birth it. It was fun to do, no rules, no worries! I highly recommend it to everyone! It was very liberating!

That's similar to what my granddaughter and I did when she was 5. I trimmed the pieces into 12 inch squares then cut in half to make triangles and joined with pink triangles. She is the one that picked the stripped setting.

That's so cool! You started when you were 5? I'm jealous!

My granddaughter started when se was 5. I self taught in my late 50s. :) I was given a machine that has speed control so I set it at the slowest speed I could and had 3 grandkids sewing.......ages 5, 7, and 9. Two have small quilts and one has a couple of pillows. Glad we had that time together. Now I am 550 miles away from them.

I had quite forgotten Mile a Minute! I love it. I'll make another one for sure. I did mine 10" x 12" (approx.), with really small scraps, just to get the hang of it. I looked great. I was very pleased. So, I'll second that recommendation! . In message , Taria writes

Thank you everyone! I have sent her all the links. I think she just wants to do something simple. Like a 4 patch or 9 patch but without any rhyme or reason to color placement. This will be her very first quilt. Wish I could go to her house or have her to mine to work with her, but I don't know her *that* well.

I couldn't remember the term Postage stamp quilt... or charm quilt. Will do another search on those to see what comes up.

Y'all are great! Thanks for all the help!

Taria, I've been cutting tumblers too. Everytime I have scraps, I cut them up! I have two different sized templates, and I'm using the larger of the two. Haven't sewn any together yet, but I will. I always feel better when all the scraps are cut into tumblers, 2" strips, or 2" squares....I actually enjoy doing it when I don't feel like tackling anything else.
