New Old SM is home

Brought the Pfaff 130 home today.

I think it was sitting lonely and neglected for some length of time. For not only was it quite filthy, it was drier than a popcorn fart.

I cleaned it mercilessly and with no regard for antique value. Pulled out wads of fuzz, dust bunnies, thread ends, and cleaned out an outrageous quantity of dirt, but not even the teeniest smidge of oil or grease. I have oiled it, and oiled it some more, and tommorow I will oil it yet again. I have also made DH promise to order me a glue syringe from his electonics supply. I am going to take this stupid sewing machine oil dispenser, slice it right open, pour the oil into a bottle, and henceforth use a glue syringe to oil my machines. La! but I am sick of it takeing forever and a day to oil a sewing machine! I used to use a glue syringe, but the place I was getting my oil closed up so I have to get it from Jo-Anns now. I ought to shop for it online.... I managed to lose the syringe somewhere by the wayside over the years.

Anyway, the flywheel has gone from hard moving to something resembleing proper smooth movement. Tomorrow after more oiling I will try one of the spare belts I have around and plug her in. A good run ought to shake loose any gunk and junk that is left and work the oil in well.

NightMist ought to ring up Billy the Clown and have him over to go over all the machines, they are due for their annual check-up.

Poor Pfaff! it sounds like it really needed some TLC!

I had a lot more luck with the Vesta treadle I was given last week - it needed a few drops of oil a dusting and it was ready to roll

HI NM, I have an oiler that is a tall, rather thin plastic bottle with a brass tube (the length of the bottle) that stores inside the bottle. When I use it I can pull out thetube and hit any place I need it. I found it when I got my first Featherweight.

Well I plugged her in and the motor is absolutely sound. It's one of those old Safety motors you used to see on small mechanical things back when. 1/13 horse, notably heftier than the other machines. I can sew light suedes and garment leathers with the Bantam and she is 1/15 horse.

Unfortunately my spare belts are all the same size and too big. The motor mounting cannot be moved on this machine to accomodate a slightly different sized belt, so I'm going to have to find one that is exact. I hope I can find a proper round or half round instead of haveing to get one of those universal things that look like an oversized rubber band. I imagine Billy the clown can hook me up, he does a fair bit of work on older machines and has spare parts as well as connections to get parts. Having a sewing machine guy that makes housecalls (at no extra charge!) is a _good_ thing.

One minor moment of panic. The set screws on the hinges were loose, and after the grime was cleaned out they let go. I darned near dropped the machine onto the bent wood in the well when I went to put it down so Ash wouldn't mess with it.

Ash loves the cabinet. He thinks it is just the niftiest thing with all the drawers and the double fold top, plus he likes to sit in the knee well. I think all kids his age (7 yesterday) like to sit in the knee well on desks and cabinets.

Pictures as soon as DH resizes them. All the graphics software has been moved to the other machine.

NightMist We are organizing. I may never be able to find anything ever again.

that was a lucky catch! who knows what would have happened if you hadn't been there when that happened! Fingers crossed your sewing machine guy comes up with the belt! a repair guy who comes to the house like he does is a godsend! (to coin a phrase)

I think all small kids like to have a hidey hole - mine need to be kept out of the treadle cabinet by "force"
