NEWBIE Question

Hi Roberta! Thank you so much! I'm so glad I asked the question. From the answers so far, I've concluded that 50-wt would be best, along with a good quality thread. I'm off to the store to get some thread right now! :>)

If you want to try machine quilting (fun and easy, with practice), get a copy of Harriet Hargrave's "Heirloom Machine Quilting" to answer all possible questions. Roberta in D

Does anyone have any advice

Thanks so much!

I suspect they will push what they carry, so you will buy from them.

I think I had the opposite problem with the first big quilt I made 25 or so years ago. I appliqued the rings for a double wedding ring onto a king-size poly-cotton sheet (didn't know any better), used another sheet for backing, and polyester batting. I probably used Dual Duty thread for the piecing & applique & that is holding up well. I hand quilted (stab stitch -- that's all I knew at the time) using Coats & Clark cotton quilting thread; it took me 2 or 3 years to finish. I have used the quilt a lot and now a lot of the quilting is coming out; I blame it on the polyester content of the sheets I use. I tried restitching it by hand, but soon gave that up because it was so much harder than what I am used to quilting now. I know the purists would not like it, but I used my machine to restitch the parts that were coming out. I wanted to be able to use the quilt, but didn't want to do so without fixing it, and I knew I would never get it fixed by hand.

But it is a small part of the total cost of making a quilt when you figure the cost of the thread relative to the cost of the fabric, the batting, the pattern, and the tools you use.

Soon there will be almost as many Virginians as there are Central NCers!

I like the Sylko 50 wt. also, but haven't been seen it since I left Ireland. Does anyone import it to the U.S.?
