Newbie question- outline quilting and so on

Okay, so, as I mentioned somewhere in the "Christmas in July" threads, I was doing this wall hanging and I am way behind after being ill.

Its three panels (Im pretty much a beginnier, and this was on the about quilting site). Three sixteen inch blocks, and then the sashing.

Well, first the quilting question. I have always quilted in the ditch before, but I would like to do something around the applique - I dont know if it would then be called "echo" or "outline", say a quarter inch outside the applque.

Problem is, while two of sqares basically have one big "iten' (one a layered tree and one a holly spray" the other has a more intricate design with different smaller appliques (candle, berries and leaves). So, can i or should I do two different styles of quilting, one of the center block and one on the upper and lower (I know I can, I guess, but should I?0

Second question, up till now I have always pinned my projects instead of basting. Is there a preference, will basting do a better job?

I do plan on using the backing and folding over instead of making a separate binding.

Oh, and I read my first Elm Creek book today - unforuntately my library only has two, so I guess Ill be visiting Amazon again.

Isnt there another series that actually are mysteries?

Thanks, and sorry about so many questions

The whole quilt should have about the same density of quilting. You might have to do a grid or something as well as the echo quilting to make it look right.

Since basting spray I don't do either, except for a few pins around the edges.

Just a note, don't sit the can of basting spray on the ironing board next to the spray starch. I can guarantee you won't like it............

quilting snippage

Earlene Fowler has a series that must be up to 9-10 books or so. They generally have some quilting in them.

Kathryn Hall Page has a couple mysteries in her Faith Fairchild series that deal with quilts - on is a mystery where the clue is found in a quilt and in others her friends mentions quilting.

Also, there's Persian Pickle Club which is a mystery that involves quilters. Sorry, I'm drawing a blank on the author.
