I love to find those slightly wierd fabrics! I generally buy three yards, and first make a lap quilt with just one large piece of fabric for the front and something in a complimentary color for the backing. And I hand-quilt it, using the figures as the quilting lines -- around the faces, deer antlers, trees, houses, whatever -- which really makes the fabric "pop". The thread I use for the quilting is usually one of the darker colors from fabric. For binding I generally get 5 or 6 packages of bias binding -- too much for the lap quilt, but I use the rest for the tote bag I make with the remaining fabric! With the remaining fabric I make a tote bag, using the backing fabric for the lining of the bag, and the extra bias binding to edge the pieces and stitch the pieces together. Now, bias binding makes horrible handles for a tote bag, so for handles I cut 1" lengths of both the funny fabric and the backing/lining fabric, edge them with bias binding, and use that for handles. (Occasionally I actually remember to cut those long strips from the fabrics FIRST.) The lap quilt will fit into the tote bag, and the combination of the lap quilt and its own bag makes a wonderful gift! Or just keep it yourself and be amused with the wonderful fabric!
