Nominate a MUST

I have an absolute favorite fabric/color and just about let the stash dwindle down to shreds. My happy gotta have is Lipstick by Patrick Lose. It is a summertime pink/red heart of a watermelon color that I cannot live without. Jenx showed me a precious collection of crib quilt happy prints:

and one of them (the chickens) just cackled for a Lipstick sash. Waaaa. I just barely had enough to frame those silly feathered biddies. Most of us regrettably have in our stash a 'what was I thinking?' balanced by a staple, faithful must have. I was able to replenish my Lipstick (even enough to put around some pigs and I have a FQ of them too). Just wondering. For those of you who quilt from stash: what is your 'cannot create without' ? Well. That didn't go very well. I wanted you to see the horses grinning. You can still see them but they've sold out. Which tells us that if you see a fabric you love, you had better bring it home with you while you can. Polly

That's the fabric Ican't live without, and there's no way to get more. I bought this atan estate sale sometime in the first year or so I started building mystash. It was 3+ yards and I picked it up thinking ' this is prettyugly but it'll make a nice, light weight backing.' I quickly foundthat my 'ugly' fabric was perfect to stand in for feathers, birds, tree trunks, hair, fur, mountain tops .... you name it. It's notreally a batik, even though it looks like one, but the pattern showspretty strongly on the back, just washed out. Yes, more uses. Therewas no selvage, but so much of the rest of the fabric I bought thatday was from 'Samamish Brothers' that I suspect this one might be fromthere, too. I'm down to less than a yard. This is one I eke out bydrips and draps and mostly use for applique. When I carve up the lastof this fabric I'm gonna shed a tear for the workhorse of my stash. Sunny awake way too early

I love to find those slightly wierd fabrics! I generally buy three yards, and first make a lap quilt with just one large piece of fabric for the front and something in a complimentary color for the backing. And I hand-quilt it, using the figures as the quilting lines -- around the faces, deer antlers, trees, houses, whatever -- which really makes the fabric "pop". The thread I use for the quilting is usually one of the darker colors from fabric. For binding I generally get 5 or 6 packages of bias binding -- too much for the lap quilt, but I use the rest for the tote bag I make with the remaining fabric! With the remaining fabric I make a tote bag, using the backing fabric for the lining of the bag, and the extra bias binding to edge the pieces and stitch the pieces together. Now, bias binding makes horrible handles for a tote bag, so for handles I cut 1" lengths of both the funny fabric and the backing/lining fabric, edge them with bias binding, and use that for handles. (Occasionally I actually remember to cut those long strips from the fabrics FIRST.) The lap quilt will fit into the tote bag, and the combination of the lap quilt and its own bag makes a wonderful gift! Or just keep it yourself and be amused with the wonderful fabric!

I like that too, Sunny. It reminds me somewhat of one of the blenders that goes with the Laurel Burch Mythical Horses line. I bet you'd like that one, too.

That is just such a grand idea, Mary. Those smiling horse would make a precious tote for a horse lover and I know just the one. Thank you. Polly

I know I had that fabric in the past. Email mne a reminder about next Wednesday to look for it. If any is still in the stash it is yours.
