I just signed up for a class (in April) to do the Salsa and Guacamole quilt (design by Marti Michell) - it's in the Kaleidscope ABCs book. So...I went shopping today and found the Perfect Asian fabric - and bought all 6&7/8 of it. I'm supposed to get 8 repeat patterns and then 3 yards more "for outer border and binding" the binding is listed as requiring 3/4 yards so I assume you need 2 & 1/4 for the binding.
So the math - 24 inch repeat times 8 is 5&1/3 yards plus 2&1/4 is a total of about 7&2/3 yards. I'm about 3/4 yard short I think. And that's if I don't screw up the cutting! There's a sample in the store on the wall that I really like with 2 optional borders - a thin
2inchish inner and a thicker 6+ outer that they used the same fabric as the design fabric for. (I don't have the book yet to know border sizes). I like that the borders make it a big - "real sized" quilt and it's a neat idea to have the outer border be what you use for the blocks since they are all turned around! So I don't have enough for the border :(
I've looked and looked on-line and I just can't find the fabric anywhere. I know I can do the outer border in a different fabric but I'm sad - what would look good with fabric? I don't think it would be as dynamic. I could make the outer border skinnier too... When you decrease the border by say, an inch, does that dramatically reduce the amount of fabric you need?
So first, is there some wonderland fabric online store that maybe I haven't found (!) or maybe do a smaller border? This would be my first real sized quilt and I have little experience with it all. I feel like adventure-queen just getting my own fabric instead of the kit :)
I hope this all makes sense - I've been at this all day and my eyes are crossing!
Thanks for any advice or comments!
