Not quite enough fabric - what's the best choice...

I just signed up for a class (in April) to do the Salsa and Guacamole quilt (design by Marti Michell) - it's in the Kaleidscope ABCs book. So...I went shopping today and found the Perfect Asian fabric - and bought all 6&7/8 of it. I'm supposed to get 8 repeat patterns and then 3 yards more "for outer border and binding" the binding is listed as requiring 3/4 yards so I assume you need 2 & 1/4 for the binding.

So the math - 24 inch repeat times 8 is 5&1/3 yards plus 2&1/4 is a total of about 7&2/3 yards. I'm about 3/4 yard short I think. And that's if I don't screw up the cutting! There's a sample in the store on the wall that I really like with 2 optional borders - a thin

2inchish inner and a thicker 6+ outer that they used the same fabric as the design fabric for. (I don't have the book yet to know border sizes). I like that the borders make it a big - "real sized" quilt and it's a neat idea to have the outer border be what you use for the blocks since they are all turned around!

So I don't have enough for the border :(

I've looked and looked on-line and I just can't find the fabric anywhere. I know I can do the outer border in a different fabric but I'm sad - what would look good with fabric? I don't think it would be as dynamic. I could make the outer border skinnier too... When you decrease the border by say, an inch, does that dramatically reduce the amount of fabric you need?

So first, is there some wonderland fabric online store that maybe I haven't found (!) or maybe do a smaller border? This would be my first real sized quilt and I have little experience with it all. I feel like adventure-queen just getting my own fabric instead of the kit :)

I hope this all makes sense - I've been at this all day and my eyes are crossing!

Thanks for any advice or comments!

You guys are quick :) Thank you!

I know I need to chill a bit - I get sooo worked up! I'll take a look around at coordindating fabric too and try to relax :)

The fabric is Robert Kaufman, Quilt Gate Hyakaryoran Sateen 3 HR-5703-11C. I got all the details from the bolt since I knew I was a shy a bit...

I would probably make the border smaller and add another border or two of another fabric. If you tell us what fabric you are looking for, maybe someone here can help you look. Is there a name printed on the selvage? Usually there is a manufacturer name and often a designer or collection name.

Who says your border and binding must be the same fabric? Find a coordinating fabric for those and use the Asian print for the blocks. Debra in VA See my quilts at:

I think you could use an alternative fabric for borders as suggested BUT If you still want to get more of this fabric, I have had good luck searching this way, go to

Did you ask the Shop Owner? I was in that situating--needed 14 yd and the Shop Owner went into her storage and gave me the rest for her cost as she didn't remember the regular price. She has set aside some for a project that she was 'thinking about'. She said she could order more for herself and didn't have a deadline like I did. Can't hurt asking. She/He may have something else that would be a good second choice.

lol You're welcome! Glad I could help. I have to admit there wasn't much hunting skill involved. I purchased a Kaufman Quilt Gate fabric from HoP a while back and knew they had a very nice selection of them so I really just got lucky that they had the one you were looking for.

Please remember to post a link to a picture when you're finished. That fabric will make a wonderful kaleidscope quilt!

btw..... You might want to double check the repeat of the fabric. HoP has it listed as 22" not 24". You may not need as much extra as you thought you did.
