For years I have had two large tubs of novelty prints. Whenever I see a novelty print of interest I buy a half yard and add to the tub. They have come in handy many times but the collection was getting way out of control. The lids didn't fit on the overflowing tubs and there were novelty prints tucked in along the sides and spilling onto the floor.
I sorted all novelty prints that would be suitable for an "I Spy" type quilt and cut as many 6.5" squares as the piece would yield (or up to ten if it was a larger piece of fabric). Now when I need a baby quilt I will just select prints that apply to that family and sash about 30 together for a quick "I Spy". I have made this type "I Spy" in the past with navy or black sashing and red corner stones. They were great. With the squares already cut it will be much less messy to make.
Now lids fit back on the novelty tubs and the floor in front of the shelf is clear of clutter. The pre-cut squares (and yes, I did fussy cut some of them) are neatly stacked in a large plastic bag waiting for that last minute gift.
