Novelty print sorting idea

For years I have had two large tubs of novelty prints. Whenever I see a novelty print of interest I buy a half yard and add to the tub. They have come in handy many times but the collection was getting way out of control. The lids didn't fit on the overflowing tubs and there were novelty prints tucked in along the sides and spilling onto the floor.

I sorted all novelty prints that would be suitable for an "I Spy" type quilt and cut as many 6.5" squares as the piece would yield (or up to ten if it was a larger piece of fabric). Now when I need a baby quilt I will just select prints that apply to that family and sash about 30 together for a quick "I Spy". I have made this type "I Spy" in the past with navy or black sashing and red corner stones. They were great. With the squares already cut it will be much less messy to make.

Now lids fit back on the novelty tubs and the floor in front of the shelf is clear of clutter. The pre-cut squares (and yes, I did fussy cut some of them) are neatly stacked in a large plastic bag waiting for that last minute gift.

Susan you are definitely smart. My stash is totally out of control. Stacks and boxes and rolled up bunches and ...... I like your idea and your thinking. It makes a lot of sense for the way you intend to use the fabric. Smart, smart, smart.

thanks for the encouragement, Sunny. Yesterday afternoon I was able to clear the stack in front of one shelving unit so now I can get to that unit to find what is on the shelves. I only have today left on my time chart for sorting. Tomorrow life starts back on the regular schedule.

The table is partically cleared. My goal is to not handle anything too many times. I want to have a permanent storeage place for anything I remove from the table. The past few months I have just been moving things off the table to create work space. This usually meant adding to the piles on the floor.

Back to work. . .
