I looked up 'Octagon Star' for you, in my Barbara Brackman Encyclopaedia. The 'octagon star' there is shown as an eight-diamond star within an octagon. The nearest example to what you describe is: an octagon in the centre, isosceles triangles on each of the eight sides, infill between those triangles to make a larger octagon, triangles to set in the corners to make a square. The larger outer octagon should be drawn with alternate sides making up part of the final square; this results in the inner octagon being drawn with points towards the outside square. You would draw your first octagon - whether you start from the inner or the outer - by drawing a circle, and dividing it equally into eight parts. . In message , hannah writes

Thanks Cheryl, but I think the one asked for had an octagon in the centre.

I don't have book and I tried to draw in EQ5 but I can't seem to make it come out right.

Thank-you for the pattern, It well work nicely, I printed it out and with a couple of lines made it into the octagon star block. It was the octagon in the middle that I was having problems with.
