Only a quilter

I had the avocado, since I absolutely detested Harvest Gold. I was so glad when the last of those appliances died and I finally had a completely bisque kitchen.

I also remember the pink/turquoise appliances. My mother chose turquoise and was elated to do so. Ugh. I like the color, but not in appliances. ;)

Howdy! That's one of the things I consider, Taria, when considering appliances: real cost. I no longer keep everything until it dies its final death. When the repairs cost more than 1/2 the price of new, may be time for a change; add in the efficiency and convenience factors and I'm happy to replace and save money. The current 'fridge is black because I want black. It has a water dispenser inside the door (just one main door; can't stand side-by-sides), freezer on top where it should be . Will hold a huge turkey upstairs, or 3 in the 'fridge. Big veggie bins, 'cause we use those a lot. Fingerprints? Where? I do manage to wipe it clean - duh! Used to have a job where we wore nylon uniforms, around a stainless steel kitchen: hideous; the s.s. leaves black & gray streaks on nylon; what a mess. And s.s. looks cold and dated, as well as industrial; I don't need or want that in my home. Resale value? Don't care; I got what I wanted because I use it, I own it, I paid for it. ;-D

Like quilting fabric: get what you like, like what you got.

Now, T, what's this about looking at houses? Who's moving?

Happy day, oh happy day. For 2 reasons: We believe supporting small business is good for the economy and we know if there's a problem they will come DO something, we are getting the new refrigerator from a little guy. He called today and said, "You know what? We can get a bisque refrigerator for you. I told them if the Big guys can do it, you just aren't looking at what's available." He was quite tickled to one-up the lazy guy that said it can't be done. I was very happy to simply replace the refrigerator without having to feed a few lazy folks to the gators. You would think that just buying a refrigerator was no big deal. Truth is - I could live just fine with a lime green and purple striped refrigerator. I guess it's just the age-old challenge of "You can't do that". Watch me. Polly

I'm glad you found what you wanted, Polly! I also love to deal with the small businesses. We have a "small" plumber who is a dream to deal with, and we just had our AC unit replaced by another "small" business guy -- better price, better service, wonderful recommendations from other customers we know. :)

When I bought a new refrigerator for my new house, I bought a side-by-side. I have my old smaller side-by-side in the garage. I'm so sorry I didn't get a bottom freezer - fridge on top for the new kitchen refrigerator. Since both of my refrigerators are side-by-sides, I can't store something big like a pizza in either refrigerator!

You see the same thing a lot in the midwest. My mother finally got rid of the second fridge in the garage after her kids moved out. Now that she's has grandkids, she has a small dorm sized fridge in the garage of the vacation house for drinks.

We?ve been on the hunt for a house for us. I don't know how 4 of us fit in this house before dh retired. Now that he is home all the time the house has gotten kind of small! How does that work?

My limit is mid July and then I give up. I am looking for something close to our needs and made offers, been in escrow and played in bidding wars with no luck on the few we like. Pretty soon I am going to consider hunkering down and staying here and reworking the place.

Has anyone taken over a master suite for a sewing room? Really like sewing machines, color is secondary to working well in any appliance. Any color at least matching follows in priority for me. WooHoo to finding the one you want! Taria

I LIKE that idea, Roberta. Just might do it one day. Of course, we'd want fabrics that don't show catsup and grape jelly. Polly

Taria- I've dabbled in real estate on a modest scale for many years- buldi= ng, renovating and/or remodeling. Sometimes a small tweak will fix a prob= lem with the current house. Would a room dedicated as a 'man cave' for you= r DH where he can hang out and make his own 'messes' do the trick? Could = you re-purpose another room (ie: a formal dining room become a study or fam= ily room), combine two rooms into one larger room, enclose a porch or patio= for additional living space, move a door or window for better furniture pl= acement and make a room more functional, build an addition or a separate st= and alone small building for him or for your sewing room? Yes, you can use= the master bedroom for sewing! What could be more ideal than a large clos= et and it's own bathroom when you are sewing? Go for it! And I've heard = of some quilters who took over the large mostly-unused formal living room f= or sewing... and the family used the family room/den exclusively.

Taria, I haven't taken over the master suite, but I have a friend who has. She has a longarm machine and her sewing machines in there, as well as most of her stash, of course. Her DH is fine with it. :)

Me. We actually sleep in what was the "media room", with a bathroom across the hall. Much more accessible than the chopped up mess in the "master bath". I now use the master bath for pressing -- which is nice because it's got a skylight. The sewing room actually gets natural light from three directions during the day.

Thanks Leslie. I really am ready to move but we just might have to go for the tweaking. The yard here is really getting to be a lot for us and the pool is an expense that although used is really underutilized. The neighborhood still holding but anything that goes into this house is really money down the drain. I'd like to have chickens but can't here and the area I am looking at is closer to the hospital, not a bad consideration with dh's heart issues. All that said tweaking would help this place a lot. I've lived here long enough to have some great ideas that I can still implement. Most of the space works pretty hard already but there are still things that can be done. I'm glad to hear that the master into sewing room isn't the dumbest idea I have ever had. DH is really willing to do most anything that will make life easier for us, that helps. Thanks for all the ideas. Taria

Down under most fridges have a freezer on top, although there is a trend to have side by side fridge and freezers.

How is your latest renovation project going Leslie ? Finished ?

Last year we went to buy a new toilet. We were looking at one we liked when a salesman came over. He said that particular toilet could flush 15 golf balls with no problem. Now how on earth could he make a statement like that. I'll bet whoever did the experimenting for that statistic had to buy a new toilet.

We have had water saving toilets in both bathrooms for more than 5 years and have never had problems wth either of them. Barbara in SC

I am so thankful that I bought a frig with the freezer on the bottom. It's so much easier for an old "foggie" (sp.?) like me. It's also boring white so hopefully changing color fads won't affect me too much. I wanted stainless steel but from what a couple of friends say they are hard to keep looking clean.
