Opinions please

Hi all, this afternoon I pinbasted 'Rosiesdishes' and I'm not sure about how the top turned out. Ok I think the lime border should be a bit smaller, but I won't change that anymore. But what I still could change is the width of the outer borders. At the moment the quilt would be big enough for a single bed, but maybe I should make the outer borders smaller and make them all the same size ???? This (future) quilt isn't made for any special purpose, so I still could make a wall-hanging or a baby quilt out of it. What do you think ? Oh, you can find it on my webpage under WIP's , second picture. The first one is the monster I'm currently handquilting :-)

Heidi, if this were mine and not made for any special purpose, I'd probably make all the outer borders the same width. I think the width of the side borders is fine, but the extra width looks a bit out of proportion to the center of the quilt.

By the way, I always like it when a touch of black is included in a quilt, and in this case, it's very striking! I'd strongly recommend keeping it!

Oops, I meant the extra width of the top and bottom borders. I didn't make that very clear, did I?

I would make the outside borders all the same size (width of the side borders is good). And then I think I would bind it in the lime green or the hot pink.

Heidi, I sure prefer lap size vs baby quilt size, considering the great work there is to finish a quilt. So, you could take the actual measure and add some applique' embellishment on top and bottom, or some flying geese. ciao

Heidi, If this were mine and I wanted to keep it twin bed size I would applique a strip the size and color of the inner border along the top and bottom making the outer border appear the same width. Then you would have a small piece top and bottom that may or may not show up that much when you get it on a bed. You could alway applique a few flowers or vines in those spaces too. And it would then need to be bound in the bright pink color. IMHO. Of course, I always prefer a quilt that fits on a bed because I am out of wall space. :~}

Took me a while to understand the comment about the black

Heidi, have you given the quilt top an actual try on a bed, that is - with pillows? It may be that the wider area at the top and bottom will look 'intended' if one is covering a pillow area and one is falling over the edge at the foot of the bed? Louise is quite right, the accent touch of black is just right. Snuggle kitty for us. Polly

Wow, Heidi! I've just enjoyed a little trip through all of your pages, and your quilts are wonderful! I especially like the snail's trail (have I mentioned that I love blue and yellow ) finished quilt and the NYB you have on the UFO page.

Sorry Heidi, but I do think there is too much of the (mostly) yellow border. The pieced part of the quilt looks swamped. However, if you reduced the size of the border, what would you feel about adding a pieced border? With two fabric borders, it could stand a pieced border, similar to the pieced part of the quilt probably. See what you think. You could then go straight to the binding. The measurements could be sorted out by altering the yellow border so as to make everything fit. . In message , Heidi from Germany writes

Thanks for all your opinions ! I decided : this will be a baby quilt, which means I'll make all the outer borders the same width, I'll probably make it even a bit smaller. I like the idea of applique, but now it's already basted and I won't take it apart . But I think some kind of flowers and leaves on the border in lime and the dark pink would have been very pretty. (of which I never would have thought ) And of course I'll let you know when I'm happy dancing Heidi from Germany

So much for the subtle beg. ;) I still like them, though!

Sandy, this was a very very subtle beg, but I have to disappoint you . One of them lives with my niece, the other has been a wedding quilt for my nephew and I really struggled with the pattern. I took it from a German magazine and I suspect they took a pattern in inch and didn't convert it correctly in cm's , both times I had troubles with the triangles. Thanks for your compliments :-))) Heidi from Germany

You can still do the appliqué after you have it quilted.

Yes ? can't get the idea of applique out of my head. The sandwhich is hanging here and whispers 'flowers' 'leafs' . I already thought about quilting the middle part and then binding the quilt. Then I could do the applique and then quilt the rest. Well, I will have some time to decide :-))) Heidi from Germany

I have done both hand and machine appliqué, after quilting, Heidi. Not as much as Cheryl, but enough to know that it really works, and is far easier than quilting around the appliqué. If you machine applique, that also acts as quilting. If you hand appliqué, it is so easy to sew - just push the needle through the cushion of batting. Lovely! . It looks great like it is to me. Maybe the lime border could be a little wider, but I'm positive that it shouldn't be smaller. It's the perfect zinger for your quilt, and every quilt needs a zinger.

I see your QI also says it's purrrfect. Debra in VA See my quilts at
