OT - A Friendly Reminder

If you are sensitive to graphic photos, do not watch. An important lesson for everyone with New Year's Eve coming up.

I don't consider that friendly. A horrifying warning, yes. Friendly reminder, never.

It's all in how you interpret it I guess ... it's meant as 'coming from a cyber friend in the hope that everyone stays safe'. That's all.

Ok, no way I'm looking without knowing what I'm looking at, but my interest is piqued. This isn't the stupid one with the girl with the fork stuck in her head, is it? I guess the lesson you were supposed to learn was don't fall face first into a fork, but a verbal warning is pretty good for me.

I figured that was what you meant, Sharon. You don't seem to be the type who's lookin' to offend or shock.

Frankly, the video is why I always make a point to be the designated driver. No way do I want a friend's fun or relaxation to be so costly for someone else. As my mom used to say, "my rights end where your nose begins!"

Also, that's why we usually spend NYE at a neighbors house and *walk* home! The biggest danger is of ruining another neighbor's roses!

Thank you, Sharon, for reminding us that if we're not careful, our "good time" can equal disaster for another!!

For anyone who's too nervous about clickin' the link, it's a video of the effects drunk driving has had on a lovely young woman. Though, from what I've seen, her lovely face is not as aesthetically beautiful as it was before the accident (3rd degree burns over 60% of your body does that to you), her soul still is. Truly, truly heartbreaking. :(

So while not for the squeamish, I'd say it's perfectly appropriate for anyone who thinks that "one more drink won't hurt anyone."

Big quilty hugs to all - and here's hopin' for a happy and safe NYE!! Connie :)

It shows before and after pictures of a beautiful young woman who was extremely badly injured and burned in an auto accident with a young drunk driver. She's really damaged badly- very, very badly damaged. The pictures are very graphic, but certainly not anything to make you barf (IMO)- no blood and guts type stuff- but terrible burn scars and terrible damage to her face. If you have any doubts- don't look. But then I saw a lot of those type of photos and clips in my police training, so I am prolly not as susceptible to those sights as others might be. I do have tremendous empathy for her- please don't think I'm cold hearted- it's absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating what can happen to innocent people minding their own business.

Don't drink and drive and stay off the streets when others may be doing so. That's the message and it's always very appropriate- for New Year's Eve more than any other time.

A timely warning Sharon. I saw this beautiful young lady on Oprah a year or so ago. Her courage, warmth, and the love of her family is something to truly behold.

I am 90% picked as designated driver as, being a diabetic, I joke that "two drinks and I'm out", so it's very rare that I drink when we are out.

So many kids, and adults think that they are indestructable. They very quickly learn that they are not.

Take care

Gotcha.

Thank you. Nope, I won't look. Not that it would make me sick, I don't gawk at accidents on the highway either. Not my business.

No. Way worse than a mere fork. That I could have easily handled seeing.

A friendly reminder would have been mentioning to be careful of drunk drivers during the holidays. I doubt that any of us quilters would be so uncaring of others that we would drive drunk and cause harm to another person.

I'm not sure why that video is on UTube since a drunk won't be moved enough to stop driving drunk because a drunk doesn't care about anything or anyone, ever. It just seemed like exploitation of an already much injured person.

Since I can't un-see what I have seen, I just keep repeating the Rule of Three to myself, and praying that those involved in causing her injuries do suffer threefold what they have wrought. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Thank you Connie and you are right - it wasn't meant to shock anyone. This lovely young girl has had her life changed forever because of a drunk driver - that person needn't be an alcoholic either, just a person who, like you say, may have had that one drink too much. Have a safe New Year one and all.

"Drunk" drivers are not all alcoholics; sometimes they are simply your friends or neighbors (and possibly quilters :) who have one more drink than they should have before driving. For some of us, that may be two drinks.

True, but we might know someone who IS a potential drunk driver. I know I do. The majority of my hubby's colleagues (who aren't quilters!) drink like the proverbial fish. One co-worker tried to drive after SIX rum & cokes over a 2 hour period. Thank the Lord my hubby is bigger than average and was able to wrestle the keys from his hand!! And when I was a little girl, our best family friend killed a teenager driving drunk. :(

My MIL was another (hasn't had a drink in over 30 years, thank God) ... she drove drunk with 6 Girl Scouts (and her own daughter) in the car and wrapped the car around a telephone pole. Again, thank God no one was killed.

Point is, WE may not be the drinkers (I think men drink more on average than women, anyway), but we may know someone who IS.

True, a drunk wouldn't care about anything except his next drink (though, really, that person would be called an alcoholic rather than just a drunk) ... but WE've seen it and WE care. I can tell you for sure, that video and that poor soul will be first and foremost in MY head when friends start leaving tonight. I might pause normally in telling a friend that they're too drunk to drive ... but not after seeing that video. No way.

And it may very well be an exploitation (though to me it didn't seem that way - I think it was done by a friend of their family), but if that video stops ONE drunk driver from doing that to someone else, I'll bet you that poor woman would be happy and not mind the exploitation one bit.

We honestly can only hope. I'll bet he feels horrible about what he did to her ... but I'll also bet you that he still drinks. Go figger.

Hugs!! Connie :)

We always need to remember ... that pushing the limits EVEN ONCE can have lifelong devastating effects... on our lives, the lives of our families and friends and on the lives of individuals and families whose sole error was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I also have heard this young woman speak. That she is not embittered about life amazes me. She truly embodies the spirit that beauty exudes from within.

I do not find the images grotesque or disgusting. They brought tears to my eyes. They merely show the strength of the human spirit when bad things happen. Sadly -- when a drunk causes an accident -- it seems he always comes away with few injuries than the individual he hits.

No one wants to admit that they have had one too many. Just remember when you are out there... the guy coming at you may have had one too many -- and you need to be 100% at your best reacting to his poor judgement.

To all a safe and happy New Year's Eve!

I think you misunderstood me. Drunken people, alcoholics or not, do not care about their own well being, or anyone else's, while they are drunk. Being drunk simply takes all the good sense right out of a person and having watched the video isn't going to keep car keys out of their hands, someone sober has to do that.

Quilters are planners, and I like to think that generally we are more likely to plan for someone else to be a designated driver or a sober voice of reason before we take our first drinks. I could be wrong, but I truly hope not. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Unfortunately, you are more than right ... several of hubby's colleagues are PhDs ... and even intelligence doesn't make for intelligent decisions. What's even more frightening is that these are government folks - and one DUI could mean a revocation of their security clearance. Yet they still continue to drink, and I'm sure, drive (we've tapered off on the nights out with the colleagues). :(

We're innundated by drinkers here (it IS the "party town" of the Panhandle) and it's scarier and scarier to go out on the roads after 8pm. Let's just say that it's been years since I've been to a JoAnn's Moonlight Madness sale because of the "madness!!!" :(

Hugs!! Connie

I was devasted when I saw this on my evening news.

The 24 year old drunken driver was treated and released. His Blood Alcohol Level was more than 3x the legal limit.

How tragic for these two families.

How terrible Kate - my heart just broke when I read this. Yet another

*friendly* reminder for people to think twice before they get behind the wheel of their vehicle after a few drinks. Drunks watch tv too, I'm sure of that. Hopefully, some of them wake up and see the devastation they can cause.

That news made my heart sink...what a terrible loss.

It's ironic isn't it, that the drunk always manages to walk away...
