If you have not seen this version of the Hallelujah Chorus, it is well worth three minutes of your day.

It makes me very sad. I grieve to see something so magnificent turned into such mockery. Polly

Oh Polly. I, too, have sung and heard Messiah in the usual magnificent way; and I have known many silent orders of monks. However, I truly didn't feel any mockery at all. Could you perhaps watch it again and look for the enthusiasm of the children (especially the 'soprano' trying to reach the high note - and the two working the 'Lord' and 'Lords' with their feet); and think of the hours of practice they must have put it to do it? Please try, just once. After all, someone must have loved it hugely to go to so much trouble to work it all out.

(I did wish the audience hadn't laughed so noticeably, but otherwise I loved it). . In message , Polly Esther writes

I don't think it's mockery - I think it's a fresh look at an old favorite and quite enjoyed it. Allison

I think it's fresh. I also think it is neat that people can read the words. So many will hum along, but really have no idea what the actual words are.

Plus I have sung the Messiah, and the Hallelujah chorus in particular, enough times to thoroughly enjoy a take on it that has a wee bit of humor. So many people who participate in, or organize such presentations and sings are such pompous jerks that I very much feel that there is significantly less mockery in the silent monks than there is in allowing the piece to be presented by such total prats.

Now you could find a bit of mockery of *real* silent monks in it. I however consider that the question may enter some minds and cause them to look up what such vows of silence really are. And that can only be a good thing, for understanding often leads to fine things such as tolerance, compassion, and even to admiration for such dedication.

Silent Monks ..... how on earth does anybody NOT talk???? Surely they don't quilt.

Howdy!

Clever, indeed.

And certainly more entertaining than the many truly horrible performances by inadequate choirs & other musicians who mangle this composition every year. Yes, it's good to at least try it; but I can't stand one more bad version of a great oratorio. Esp. not at Christmas. ;-) I'd rather be quilting.
