OT - Another Windows 7 question

Santa left us (DH & I) a new computer under the tree!!!! It has Windows 7... Our old computer (the one I'm still using) is an XP.... at least until DH gets all the new stuff figured out and can "educate" me . Question? - Currently, DH uses Outlook for his email and I use Outlook Express for mine -- just so we don't get one HUGE download of mixed messages. Well, Win7 doesn't have a choice of using those two.... Any suggestions on what to do???? I love Outlook-Express!

Windows Mail is the new Outlook Express, it handles very similarly.

Outlook was never part of Windows, though it may well have come preinstalled on the old computer, which would make it tricky to pull from the old computer and put on the new one, though it should be possible to use an older version of it on Windows 7.

Windows Mail has the capability to set up more than one profile and to password protect them, thus allowing multiple users. A while back, I used to hear a lot of problems with this function for OE, but I'm not sure if that means it's improved lots, or I'm just not listening in the right places!

Thunderbird is free to download and is fairly similar to OE, I've never set it up for multiple users, but it's definitely possible to do so, even if you just download into separate folders. I'm with Joanna on not using Windows Mail, so I'd probably set up Thunderbird for multiple users.

Windows Mail is the same as Hotmail (from MSN.com). Several people I know use gmail and love it. Unfortunately there is no way to move Outlook Express to a new computer (I tried and failed) .

I thought Windows now allowed for different users on the system? you know, like they had on the Ferranti Titan in 1964?

If so, just set up two different accounts. Each of them can use whatever mail software it likes.

You could always use Gmail for your email service and read mail in a browser.

Depends on what mail server you use. I ended up buying Outlook 2007 on Ebay and installing it on my new latop. Then I had to put Outlook on the old computer and when you start it for the first time it asks you if you want to import your email & addresses. You say yes and when it is complete you make a copy of that .pst file and paste it on your new computer. Since you say DH uses Outlook hopefully you have a copy of it you can use to install.

Oh, say it ain't so. I just ordered a new PC and bit the bullet and got 7 instead of the XP Professional we've been using for years.

OE is the only real email program I have ever used. I have a Hotmail account for NG use only. I have a GMail account for my iPod and new Blackberry phone that I just got yesterday and still can't figure out how to retrieve calls thank you very much that's a whole nother topic best left for a whole nother day.

There are even some Yahoo groups that won't accept Gmail addresses. And Hotmail gets so much Spam even with the filters in place.

Well that's just DANDY,

Cindy

THANK YOU to everyone who sent suggestions! I'm printing them all out (just to be safe during the switch-over ) and will share the info with DH.

It's been a hectic holiday season and will take a while to get the new system ready to take over the current one!

Interesting about spam:

I have - Yahoo email for my yahoo groups - maybe get 5 spam per day & they all get kicked into the spam folder, so all I have to do is delete them.

Gmail that I use for all online ordering - do get quite a bit of spam, but it ALL goes into the spam folder, so all I have to do is delete.

Hotmail live for a few other things - that never gets any spam.

You'll be fine, the built in mail program with win7 handles very much like OE.
