this has soooo many 'make your own' projects and things you can make yourself i'm still working thru the menu there. worth a look if you're into making various things yourself, other than quilts, of course.

back online after a week without a landline, no phone, no internet. transformer across the road blew up that caused the car parked next to it to blow up. burned for an hour and a half with nasty black smoke that was so thick ya couldnt see thru it. the fire was so intense we didnt realize there was a car there til the fire started to burn down. the telephone pole next to it wasnt stable enough for the phone repairmen to climb up and fix the wiring til today. its like living in a third world country when things like this take so long to fix. none of the 12 houses affected are very amused. grrrr. now to see how much free service they'll pass on to us for the lack of service. the promise is if they cant fix the prob in 48 hrs or less they'll give one month free service. lets see, 48hrs = 2 days, the phone was out for 7 days. i make that 3 months free service. the new neighbour runs his online business, giving him a lot of bother. i reckon they owe him more than me anyhow. for me its just my contact to the outside world. i hope someone finds something on this site that is of use to them. heading back to read thru some of the multitude of goodies on there. j.

we're in blockhouse bay. you know those big green tranformer electricity boxes on the side of the road? we have one across the street. seems something went wrong, it blew up or started smoking or something, not sure cuz i was fast asleep at 4am when it started. then that somehow blew the car up and there was a fire that had me worried. melted one of the green rubbish bins on the side of road waiting to be picked up friday morning.

took calls from everyone everyday to find out when it would be fixed. they'd tell us call back if its not back on by noon, then again the next day, call us if its not back on by 7pm. they had to be dragging their feet big time. between telecom, chorus and vector it took them til midday thursday to get it fixed. argh. idiotic in this big city in the 21st century, eh. j.

We had problems with landline service a number of years ago. Fixed it permanently: no more landline. Everybody in the house now has his own cell phone. We get the calls intended for us personally and back each other up when needed. An unexpected happy coincidence to killing the landline was the sudden ceasing of ALL solicitation phone calls. Not one since we went totally cell. The downside to cell phones, in my opinion, is the expectation that everybody in the world carries a phone with him/her all the time and thus is instantly and constantly available and connected. I really hate that. My phone goes off when I want peace and quiet. I'll listen to voice mail later. Maybe.

how do you get the internet? here you have to have a landline whether you're on dial up or broadband. i'm on dial up as it is the cheapest and the speed here for broadband doesnt impress me enough. i just go make a cuppa tea or wash a load of laundry or vacumn or watch tv if all else fails. we no calls other than the occasional solicitation calls only if i'm offline in the evening. otherwise i usually have the dial up connected most of the day.
