OT:Buying a car - grrrrr!!

Rant, rant, rave! :)

It's bad enough our company truck took a major dump -- major enough that it will be cost effective to buy a new one. Here I thought I was done with car shopping for a long, long while. *sigh*

But dealing with car salesmen. Grrr!!! After visiting a couple of lots and leaving with my head spinning, I decided to go back to my old friend the internet. At least I could look at my options in peace. Got the truck figured out, got the financing squared away, so it's time to work on pricing. Most of the local dealers had links for internet price quotes. Cool! This should be a snap, seeing as I know exactly what I want and I know it's available that way.

WRONG! Every single stinking dealer has emailed back "we can't proceed until you call us." Well if I wanted to call them, I would have picked up the phone instead of sending an email, wouldn't I? I've called two of them back, and there wasn't one single question they asked me that wasn't covered in my initial email, and nothing they told me that couldn't have been done by return email. But when I asked why it was so necessary that I call them, they played dumb. (Maybe it wasn't playing. Who knows?) So I decided to reply by email another dealer asking them why I needed to call -- the stinker looked up my number in the phone book and called *me*!

I guess I've gotten really spoiled by my Honda and Lexus dealers. Waahhh! I wish they made work trucks! :) (Well, my employees have all decided that the Lexus will be just fine as a delivery vehicle, except they can't agree on who would be the delivery driver. *grin*)

Kathy,

My Costco referral gave me a price over the phone which was $500 above dealer cost. Go to kbb.com and you can check to see what the dealer cost if for the vehicle you are interested in purchasing.

I got my Toyota Sienna throught the credit union. Easiest purchase ever. I was armed with the prices from kbb.com. Talked to the guy at the credit union. Told him what I was interested in getting. He called me back about a day later told me the best price he could get (was about the same as the Costco price and I did not have to pay off the rest of the lease on my own car). At that time, Toyota had their 0% financing which really made it easier to get the new car. Now I only have 18 payments left and it will be all mine!

Alas, both of those services want to set up an appointment for me to go in before they quote me a price. :(

You are not buying the car from Costco. They have fleet deals with local dealers. Just one of the benefits of Costco membership.

While my parents were looking a new Nissans they parked in the Dealers lot and someone stole my Mom's Handicap Hanger. That is the lowest form of life out there. Luckily she was able to replace it in 2 days. The dealer was so uninterested they are taking their business elsewhere.

I've already got the dealer invoice, along with what the average price paid is from kbb.com and edmunds.com, including for all the options I wanted. That's the easy part.

The thing is I didn't want to spend all day on the phone when this should be so easy to do over the internet. After all, why do the dealers even bother to say they'll do an internet price quote when they really won't? That kind of misleading stuff just irks me. :(

The only good news is that as soon as I give the sales people the option codes for what I want, they know I've been up on edmunds.com and I know what prices should be. At least they are coming up with decent pricing... :)

Howdy! See the first line (...) of my note. Besides, my dealer gave me a GREAT deal, and follows up the sale w/ terrific service. Also installed my PT QLTR license plates. ;-D

Yes, I guess it was too much to expect these dealerships to be in the 21st century. *grin* As I said, I've gotten spoiled by Lexus (I can even schedule my service appointments over the internet there!)

We're getting a Toyota Tundra, V8, straight side Access Cab. We had originally thought to get a cargo van, but you know me and my thing about stupendous reliability requirements -- all the cargo vans I could find were either unreliable or super expensive. :( We'll get a ladder rack for the truck, and the guys will be in heaven -- a big, macho truck, with a place to carry long things, room inside for more stuff and power everything. It will simply ooze testosterone. :)

All the dealerships except one have gotten back to me, so now there's just one last hurdle -- seeing if the salesman can deal with me buying the truck, or if he's going to try to sell it to DH. (TRY being the operative word*snicker*)

The Mercedes is cute! Too bad it isn't a Honda. :-P
