OT Cooking help!

We were going to have breakfast for supper tonight. However rather than waffles or such we were going to do popovers. Ash took a notion to give me a real floor show in the kitchen, singing, and dancing, and bouncing up and down. So my popovers fell. Therefore the plan changed, and we had "mini yorkshire puddings" with gravy and a quick side of veggies.

Here is the problem, everybody loved the "mini yorkshire puddings". How the heck do I make popovers fall on demand? Short of playing hopscotch while I am baking anyway. There has to be a way. Usually I make kind of stiff popovers, they stay popped and we like to flip them over and stuff a soft boiled egg in the hollow.

clearly, your son's routine has become a vital bit of kitchen equipment. You remember the old nursery rhyme: Little Tommy Tucker sings for his supper...... Well, Little Ash sings, dances, jumps up and down for his supper. Hah! ;)

Yorkshire puddings will naturally rise more on the outsides than in the centre. So, make a yorkshire pudding batter (this is often quite 'runny'). Use muffin tins. Heat fat of some sort (I use oil) in the base of the muffin tins (about a tablespoon in each I'd say). The oven needs to be very hot - 400/450, and pre-heated. Pour the batter into the tins when the fat is truly hot and put straight back in the oven and cook for about 20 minutes.

Sorry - I'm no cook and do things by 'that'll be about right', most of the time now so my directions are not the best I'm afraid. . In message , NightMist writes

You could always ask Ash to 'help' tell him it's HIS specialty :) he gets rid of excess energy and you have successfully and happily made flopped popovers.

Yep, that is my popover recipe with maybe a quarter cup more milk. It is also my yorkshire pudding recipe. Guess I shall just have to take up tap dancing with Ash, and start slamming the oven door.

Everybody else has taken to clling last night's minis, "mini yorkies". I have been threatening to cut up some vegetarian hot dogs and pour the pudding over them in the muffin cups, and then we could have "mini yorkie dogs in the hole".

My family likes these, too, but I never have enough dripping for the puddings and for gravy, so I do this:

1 cup flour 1 package dry onion soup mix, sift out the onion bits & save them for salad topping or other use 1 cup milk 2 large eggs 1 tablespoonful cooking oil- for the batter

pan dripping plus oil to equal 2.5 tablespoons full

Heat oven to 425 degrees. Measure a generous half teaspoonful of the oil & dripping mix into each cup of a regular size 12 cupcake pan and place in the hot oven. Stir up the flour & soup powder a little, then add the wet ingredients all together and beat with a wisk until well blended (or use a mixer, just don't beat too long). Take the hot pan carefully out of the oven. Measure about a third cup of batter into each cup. Bake 20-25 minutes depending on your oven & how brown you like them. Make your gravy while they cook. They will deflate a little when you take them out so the edges are high and the middles are sunken in, perfect to hold gravy.
