OT: fixing a rug

OK, I bought an old rug last year, with the intention to mend the edges. It is a woollen rug which is in great condition, rather large 4x6 yds, but the edging is worn and needs covering. How would you do this? I have looked for bias binding, but it was prohibitvely expensive for the amount I would need. Would you make your own bias or are there any other suggestions.

Hey, that sounds like a good idea. Would you cut the binding strips on the bias or with the grain? Shall see if I can find a supplier who'll ship here.

If you made the felted strips, could you maybe use fabric glue to glue the fabric down instead of stitching it down? Barbara, now in FL

Well, I have been looking around and not all woollen flannel is wool! So feeling confused now!

Did look on ebay and found someone that sells polycotton bias relatively reasonable, but all that sewing............hate doing repairs!!! Not sure if it would be strong enough for a rug though.

Think I'll try and find a woollen fabric to felt, not really sure what I am looking for, and hopefully glue, there just isn't the time to sew all that distance.........

Now beginning to regret buying cheap rug at a charity sale, with a "oh i can fix that" attitude!

Maybe "boiled wool" would be an option, although colours are obviously more limited that felting it yourself.

That's an idea, we are clearing out the attic at the mo and there are a couple of moth eaten blankets that I could boil and use.....
