You just never know what a dog does/doesn't sense. We have a ceramic cat at the base of a tree in the front yard and Yogi just never seems to grasp that the cat is Not going to run from him. He barks at it, rushes at it to see if kitty wants to play and sometimes, puzzled, will ease over and pat it with his paw. That cat does not play well with others. Polly

When our dog was a puppy, he would try to engage the dog he saw in the mirror to play with him. I had the same question - couldn't he smell or feel that it wasn't a real dog? He outgrew it, but it was funny to see him do it.
