OT: furniture buttons

I am lost for words, and hoping y'all can help me out.

A friend got some furniture reupholstered and asked to have the left-over fabric to take home (good girl). I promised to help make some cushions for other furniture.

In the bag with the remnants were also 8 buttons covered with the same fabric (nice!). However, the back of the buttons has a hook (just open), not an eye.

I'm pretty sure I have seen in the past a description for how to attach these (sewing just one strand through the cushion?), so that everything comes apart nicely for cleaning. Of course, I now cannot find ANYTHING at all. It seems that "hook back" buttons are those wth what I would call an eye on the back.

Do you have any suggestion for what I can search for to find some info on this?

Well, I have worked in furniture factories so maybe I can shed a bit of light.

First off it at least sounds like decent quality buttons, sadly ones that are entirely inappropriate for use in cushions.

The button shanks are designed to be put through fabrics, not sewn atop them. then they are pulled taut through the padding of the furniture using a great huge needle and twine, and then the twine is fastened off someplace secure but unobtrusive on the frame.

You may be able to modify them for use in cushions, but I would bet that it would be a lot easier to buy some suitable blanks, cover your own buttons, and work from there.

Aha, that makes sense. Yes, the buttons did look very neat and solid. Shame we can't use them, but nice for my friend to have spares should the cats or the children eat some over the years...

I think the guy who did the furniture simply had a few extras made up, and those are what my friend got. There is plenty of small pieces of fabric to cover other buttons.

Thanks! Hanne
