OT Glider Plane covers

I think I've mentioned this project before, but now it's done! A friend and neighbor asked me if I could do a sewing project for him. He said it would be like pillowcases! Yep, 27 foot long pillowcases to use as covers for his club's glider plane. We used poly/cotton as anything else would have been too heavy to lift. They are for protection from the sun more than from rain. We layed them out in the driveway, did the first seams in the garage, and then I brought them inside to finish with french seams. If all the threads aren't enclosed, the birds pick at them! Then on to the tail covers. Next step was the ties and finally, reinforced holes on the top and bottom so that the anchor cables can be attached. By putting the holes on both sides, the covers can be rotated to save wear and tear on the upper side.

Unfortunately, during the storm we had two weeks ago, flying debris damaged the upright portion of the tail, so the plane is out of commission for about a month until they can have it repaired! After that, DH and I will get a ride in it as partial payment!! You can see it here:

Now and then, a stray glider plane lands in our pasture. We guess it looks like a 'good as any' place if things don't go quite as planned. We'll watch for you. Stay inside the fences; gators, ya' know. Polly

I enjoy reading about the unusual things that people sew, and they seem to always need to make their own pattern! Happy you have this project finished! Barbara in SC

From what I hear, they only stay up about an hour. I don't think we'll make it to gator land! I might be a little nervous about it, but I see this thing up in the air every day. We live very close to the airport.....one of the few remaining with a grass landing strip!

Alice---Good job! I know what an undertaking that was. I have helped DH cover our plane (not a glider) and it is work. Ive also had to make a canopy cover for our other plane. They are lucky we didnt make it patchwork !!!

Well done - sounds an enormous project. DS's partner has been making wing covers for his Gliders out of padded insulation foil, but fortunately his Gliders are a bit more manageable.

He flies in the FK3 category of model gliders. He has just returned from a big competition in Kentucky a very happy man - he came 2nd out of about 75, and 'Team GB' came first in the Team Event. We may not be up to much in soccer, but we can do Model Gliders!!

and with a full report and pictures of the gliders on the link to the full report (written by DS). Not really of interest to most, but Denny might find it interesting! Richard is the one with the red Cross of St. George on his tee shirt.

On the same weekend DD got a first class honours degree in Psychology (she already has a Doctorate in Music but is the eternal student at

39!). We are proud parents!!

To make it really on topic I have just finished sandwiching another baby quilt which will travel to California when it is finished. Unfortunately it came out slightly larger than expected, but the borders that went with the Jungle print were pretty! Piccies will come soon, and also the last of the calendar window hangings which should have been finished by July 1st but which were put aside for the baby quilt. I might go and find a shady spot to do the finishing bit of hand stitching on it - its

30 degrees (86 in US degrees!) and about as hot as it ever gets here. I have a very small amount of ironing to do first though (yukkk!), before I melt.
