OT Good thoughts Please

A friend of our in North Carolina has been having a run of ill luck.

3 pets died over the course of 2 months, and now her 14 year old god-daughter is very ill. The girl has had a fever since May. The local doctor kept sending her home with antibiotics and instructions to take tylenol. Finally last month he started runnng tests. The girl's mother was getting very aggressive about demanding a referral to a different doctor. Then last week the child quite suddenly was having difficulty staying stood up, and kept forgetting thngs like her name and age. After a bunch of tests for other stuff, they have finally figured out that she has encephalitis. And that the infection has attacked her mitral valv (she was born with a mitral valve defect) and it is about shot now. Plus she has had a stroke, probably because of a blood clot from the heart problem. The Duke pediatric surgery team is now waiting for the infection to be beat down so they can fix her heart, they actually have the helicopter on standby for her for when she goes.

Any good thoughts and well wishes for the poor child and her family are more than welcome.

May, MAY?? This kid has had a fever since May and the doctor is just now getting concerned? What the hell? What, they don't have insurance?

The girl and her family have all my best wishes and hopes for her complete recovery. I've saved a few special "blessings" for that doctor.

Oh gosh! What an idiotic doctor to have let it go this far! I really hope she'll be alright -- and *soon*!

Even without insurance, surely it's cheaper to test and treat her than be sued for incompetence?

Sure they have insurance. That is why they could not see a doctor other than their primary care physician without a referral. Though I imagine they might have been able to dig up somebody willing to take cash, the insurance would not have covered anything after if they had.

Now the medicals are talking about rheumatic fever, I am not sure if that is in addition to or instead of encephalitis. And now she's got surgeons making pitches to be the ones to repair her heart. Duke is actually suggesting she agree to a team in Philadelphia. Apparently they are quite good.

Her condition is listed as stable. That is a good thing, I think.

Wow! Not too unbelievable! I believe that is why they call Doctors practitioners (sp?). I send positive thoughts and prayers to the child and her family.
