OT: healing my darling son's heartache

Even though Deanna was definitely *my* dog, my sweet boy was positively heartbroken that she was no longer with us. Hubby said that whenever I was ready to get another dog, we would. I tested the waters today at the shelter and then got a call from the school that DS was in meltdown mode and just not having a good day at all, with crying bits and all that. After talking with hubby, I picked him up from school and took both children back to the shelter.

Darling boy fell in love with Brady, a super loving chocolate lab, and only 4 years old. He is rather over-weight, in fact, at 110 pounds, he is 30-35 pounds overweight!! However, he *loves* to chase his bouncy tennis ball frog (ball is the body of the frog) and has ignored the tennis ball that he brought with him from the shelter. The awesome thing is that he makes sure that he knows where both children are at all times and if he can't hear or see them, he gets up and looks for them.

Brady is a doll, and while he doesn't replace Deanna at all, he is making it a little easier. Apparently he has never encountered stairs before, so there is a little bit of a learning curve to work through. He is also too large to fit into the training crate that we had, so he will more than likely either sleep on our bedroom floor or in DSs room, though we have a feeling he will probably be comfortable in the hallway where he can hear/see all of the family..

I know that some may say it is too soon, but none of us were comfortable without a dog in the house. The only criteria we had: NOT a beagle or beagle mix, NOT the same coloring as Deanna, preferably NOT the same size as Deanna.....I think a male, chocolate lab is about as far from Deanna as we could get. The cats are not impressed, but then again, they aren't even sure what he is other than HUGE.

It's not too soon if you are happy with it. Pain hurts worse when you concentrate on it.......be happy, and love Brady...........It is the nicest thing you can do for Deanna, I think.

Larisa, I somehow missed your previous post and am truly sorry to hear of your loss. However, getting a new furbaby is a completely personal thing; for some people it takes years to be ready, and for others the next day is perfect. You did what was right for your family. Congratulations!

Larisa, the time is right when you fall in love with another dog. Clearly your family and Brady were just right for each other. I don't necessarily believe that God won't send us more than we can bear. I've seen too much in my life. But I do believe that there is much truth in the old saying "God never closes a door without opening a window." Clearly Big Brady found a way to get his massive body through that door and straight into your hearts.

Hugs, and big hugs for Big Brady. Sunny

Larisa,

It is never too soon to adopt a dog into the family. They are pack animals and need to be in a pack of their own, not in a shelter.

Luck dog and lucky family to find each other. BTW, what did you name him??

Peace,

Marsha

Who cares what anyone else thinks... when it's right for you, then it's right. And Brady sounds like just what was needed right now. When the right dog comes along, right then is the right time. I'm glad to know that there is someone to help heal after Deanna's passing. Hugs,

It's good. A boy needs a dog and a dog like this needs a boy. And you aren't dishonoring Deanna. Brady isn't a replacement. He's another Good Dog that you rescued and who may have rescued T from his grief.

Brady is the name that this lovable lump came with, and given that he has answered to it for 4 years, there was no reason to change it. If we had gotten a dog that was a year old, we might have changed the name, but....we didn't want a puppy (actually, there was a cute little thing named Roxie, but I would have been the one to have to housetrain her and everything and I just don't have *that* much time).

I joked with hubby that I should have gotten the Baltimore Orioles collar and leash that I saw (I was born and raised in Baltimore) and then it would have been perfect because Brady, the dog, has a butt as big as Brady Anderson's (used to be with the O's, not sure any more)!! Ah well, we have a red collar and a red/black leash with bones on it for Brady. Deanna had blue, and I refuse to use them for another dog - they will be donated, along with her food bowl to either the shelter or the vet clinic. Well, we're keeping her collar and I will be making a shadow box.

With regards to getting Brady from the shelter, that's where we found Deanna as well. DH and I flat-out refuse to purchase a dog (or cat for that matter) when there are so many in shelters waiting for homes. I think, if Brady hadn't been so dang huge, we might have gotten 2 dogs, but I also think that we have the right dog for the family. Like the human and feline members, Brady is a little off...lol. He is a bit cross-eyed, which makes him meander as opposed to walk a straight line, and stairs are still a novelty for him - he tries to leap over all of the ones from the patio to the deck - but he's learning. We just say he's "special" and whether that's because of his quirks or because of how he has adpated to the family already, who knows, you choose.

Larisa, still trying to adjust to a dog who can put his head on both the dining room table and the ironing board

I'm glad you went to the shelter to look. Somehow, I think, Brady needs you just as much as you and your family need him! He sounds like a gem to me! ME-Judy

The biggest compliment you can give a pet that you've loss is to love another. I'm sure he probably chose you as well. Enjoy every minute with him. After 8 years with my rescued dog, Jack, I still look at him with amazement at his ability to love me like he does.
