OT - Information-highway Robbery

If you ever use PayPal to just send money to someone, not buy anything, it will cost you! A friend of mine sent me some money using PayPal, just sent money, not to buy anything. There's a place to check-mark what the money is for. Since she clicked 'cash payment' or something like that, instead of 'good or services' - they charged her a ten dollar service fee!! Just to use a series of computer transactions to transfer money from her credit card to my PayPal account! Be warned, the highwaymen of yester-year are still very much alive and well today. They just travel the information-highway now.

Did they charge that in addition to the regular percentage? They are part of Ebay. They don't do anything for free. It is all about making money for themselves. Cheapest way I know to send money (not a check or cash) is a money order from walmart.

PayPal has always done this. I have never used them, but I had heard about that fee. I don't know if NetTeller does that, but it probably does. I have used NetTeller, but only to transfer money to an online site.

I send $$ to DD every month using Paypal -- been doing it for a long time now. They charge her a percentage of the amount sent so I make sure I send her a bit more than is needed. I'm not sure of the percentage but it's a business like anything else and they watch the bottom line -- LIKE a HAWK!!! I NEVER mark that the $$ is a cash payment, always mark it as the goods/services category and, IIRC, that makes the percentage charged lower. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

They have expenses too. When you purchase goods or services, the seller pays the fee. There are people behind the scenes making salaries and supporting families just like all of us. I don't think it is reasonable to expect businesses to do things for free.

But they SAY in two places that it is free to send money to someone, and they also did charge me a fee to receive it just as if I were a seller. I say it's over the top, but not that anyone should go without a salary.

I remember a song (The Ballad of Jesse James?) that had a line, "Some folks rob you with a gun, and some with a fountain pen......" It appears that the new breed of robbers is using computers.

"Come gather 'round ye children, there's a story I will tell. 'bout Pretty Boy Floyd an outlaw, Oklahoma knew him well."

"The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd", written by Woodie Guthrie, recorded and performed by many. The sources for written lyric vary almost as much as the sung, but on the copies I have most often the line you quote is:

"some men will rob you with a six gun, some with a fountain pen."

Yep, they just attempted to take me for about £50 for advertising in Autotrader and Exchange and Mart and also 1 Euro for 'charity'! All that should have been there was payment to a Quilt Shop!

Rang the Bank/Card People and they said they have taken them off the account without any problems and given me a new card with completely new numbers, but a good thing I checked and that they believed me.

The card was only issued in January with a new issue date, and lives in my purse which is either with me or at home - so how was it done? It was my Paypal one, but have deleted it and not put a new one back on.

Thanks, NightMist. It's sad, but sometimes the first thing to go is one's mind.......
