OT macrame

DD#2 wants me to make a macrame belt for her. Haven't done macrame for a v long time. Anyone know where I can find a pattern? Can work out the middle and end bit, just the starting it off is confusing me at the moment. She doesn't want a buckle end, just 2 loose ends so she can tie it or thread it through itself. She's only 9 and has a miniscule waist, so it won't take too long to make, just can't work out how to start it!

Many thanks

The book "Magnificent Macrame" By Marie-Jeanine Solvit(in the original french "50 Ouvrages en Macrame") appears to be going inexpensively these days and has some really nifty patterns. There are only one or two belts that I recall off hand (to lazy to run upstairs and look, lol (1)), but it is a great refresher if you haven't done it in a while. Like a lot of translated books it appears that they did some of the translation literally so that it is confusing in spots and not very accurate in others. If you can read french, which I bet you can (G), the original would probably be easier to comprehend.

If you have it worked out save for how to start, why not start in the middle and work to each end? That is a technique in macrame that is super easy, and if you are not useing a buckle it would be a natural for your design. When the item will have a fringe on each end you don't have to start with larksheads on a starter line either. Just measure off how long the loose end will be, pin or clamp it down, and start your knots.

NightMist (1) no I have not made the partridge in a pear tree or the hedge hog. I have made the Christmas tree and the cradle though.

here are a few more free patterns. i've not done any macramé in years. still using some of the things i made way back then tho. i loved the process, all those knots making the most interesting designs when mixed in various combos. have fun, do take some pix of the final result.

thanks for all the links - I'll look through them. As for starting in the middle, hadn't thought of that, what a great idea.

Thanks again
