OT: Mars Spectacular

"Mars Spectacular The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as

60,000 years before it happens again. The encounter will culminate on Aug, 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the Moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification. Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 P. M. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 A. M., that's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. SO, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughtut the month. Share this with you children and grandchildren. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN!"

I love to watch the meteor showers. When I'm at the cottage there are no lights for miles around and the stars are so close that I can almost touch them Thanks for the heads up -- I have a friend with a telescope Mim

i was in kitchen (east facing) last night and spotted mars. WOW!!! no mistaking what it was... no twinkle and the colour is obvious as well, not the usual for sure.

i called dh to have a look and asked if he knew what it was, nope says he, well its mars say i. then i'm just staring up and next thing hes gone and got the binoculars and is trying to tell me how to locate it. geez, i used to work with a freelance astronomer going to schools/camps at night with all our binocs and telescopes. kinda hard to lose mars this time, lol. silly dh but was nice to see him paying attention at least. will keep an eye on mars for the rest of the month. l thanks Vicki. jeanne*

I hope that someday we get a clear night -- all we have here is rain and fog -- A man came in the store yesterday with a T shirt from a local lighthouse. He is from Italy and I apologised for our foggy weather. He comes to Maine because it IS foggy. He said if he wanted a sunny beach he said he would go to Capri.

I'll have to think sunny Capri and maybe I'll get to see Mars.

Any time there is an awesome astrological event, it's cloudy in New England. Go figure. I've never seen a meteor shower... Only caught the comet years back because it was around a long time and during the day too.

There she goes----off to Mars again. I do hope your feint-ing slump hit the chaise and NOT the floor....and you DID have your daintily embroidered Irish Linen handkerchief with the finely crocheted lace edging fluttering to the floor as you went limp......

Now, I 'spect she will be acallin out for Eudardo to come with the smelling salts to revive her..

Butterfly (NO WAY, No way am I send> ***I*** am The Drama Queen..... as evidenced by my limp, pretty right

I do not imagine for a single second that our Leslie would be so vulgar as to swoon delicately and land upon a chaise! No no no! She would do it in proper style and position herself to fall gently and properly upon the fainting couch. The chaise is where the gentlemen perch uncomfortably whilst patting milady's hand and watching the maid lay a daintily embroidered Irish Linen lace edged hanky dampened with eau de cologne upon milady's brow in an effort to revive her.

Then again, I never was good with furniture names.....
