for DS#1. He is asking for a good 2 person game for Christmas. He has many of the traditional ones (Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk).
I'd love to find something relatively new (like within last 5-10 years) that is really fun to play with 2 people.
Also -- has anyone ever seen replacement cards for the game Taboo? I could make some -- but the ones I have found online they want $75 for! OUCH!! I love my DS -- but not that much! LOL
Me thinks it should be a game for his age group? Did you go to Toys R Us or FAO Schwartz? you can peruse games online as well. some my kids liked were: Monopoly, Sorry, game of Life, dominoes, parcheesie (sp?), checkers, chess. Card games are good too.
Backgammon!!!!! by far the best 2 person game around. its the oldest too, iirc. it is easy to learn the game and is quick to play a single game. you play both offense and defense at the same time. there is both skill and luck(dice) involved in the game. all ages play on an equal footing once the game stragegy is learned and understood as then the luck of the dice comes into play. i was taught by twin 7yo english boys living with their dad in Morocco decades ago. usually comes in a very nice looking case as well, making it easy to transport from place to place and wont lose the pieces. i also love cribbage and parchesi but my fav will always be backgammon. :) j.

Thanks -- but those cards are replacement cards for the original game (which is what I said but not what I meant!) I used the wrong word and confused you -- I need a new card set. They have the original ones just about memorized.
I should have said additional card sets. Sorry about that!
Um... my DS#1 is 30! LOL He is a grad student at UCLA and his roommate and he are big game players. They do a lot of game nights -- but also like to just stay in sometimes.
When we were first married, DH and I often played a game of backgammon before bed. I have always enjoyed board games and card games of all sorts. DH just played to be nice. Not really his thing.
Mancala (comes under other names, but this seems to be the usual one)
This is a strategy game for two people. It is easy to learn and can be played at all levels. The boards range from cheap as chips to dastardly expensive. I collect the boards as I use them in school. But it is a game played by children and adults all over the world.
Another idea would be GO. This is a deceptively simple game played form child to International competition standard. There is another version called Reversi, but that is more of a tic-tac-toe thing. But still very playable, I believe.
Then there is Mah Jong (the kit can be expensive, like chess boards) which can be two, three or four player. DH and I used to play a lot.
For more ideas look for Avalon Hill games (now published by Hasbro, I think). DH is a gamer and recommends many of these.
Happy hunting. And Mancala, Go and Mah Jong are addictive, beware! lol
One that as old or older is Go. That will stretch your brain for sure, lots of logic style strategy involved.
Lessee, he probably already has stratego and battleship.
Does he have a copy of Hoyle's rules?

Tons of games in there, many suitable for two players, and most can be played with very minimal extras. A deck of cards, paper and pencil, two feet and a decent yard, etc. There are also the rules for most of the classic board games. Handy when you are playing with a rule goon. There is also another edition that is just card games.
I would imagine that billiards, or ping pong, and what have you are rather out of the realm of what you had in mind. Though you can often pick up a ping pong table amazingly cheaply with a bit of looking and a little luck.
Though I spent most of the late afternoon playing fox and geese out in the back yard. We have a nice bit of snow so it was easy to tramp out the playing paths. I should have been working on christmas prezzies, supper was late, and I darn near lost a lung with coughing coming in from the cold. Oh well. I made hot chocolate so nobody cared if supper was late, and DH decided to make pease porridge and oatcakes anyway. Nobody will care if I am still knitting christmas morning. Clearing out my chest was probably good for me, so long as nothing got frostbit. It ran some vinegar out of the boy, and we all got the stink blowed off us in the fresh air. What I want to know now is who was the sneak that installed springs in that boy's legs when we weren't looking? He didn't get the point of the game at all, but he sure did bounce a lot!
I did the chess set last year. He is working on a doctorate in Classical Humanities and I found a beautiful set of Marble pieces -- in the shapes of various Greek gods and goddesses. Perfect for him! So definitely a good idea -- just one I've already done! :-)

David's favorite game is Trivial Pursuit. We're at the point where he knows just about every answer on every card. Santa is bringing him a new set of cards this year.
Stratego has long been a family favorite. My boys started playing ig nearly 25 years ago! So good idea! Some of the best games from decades ago are still popular today!
