OT: Need help with costume ideas

Hello all!

I am co-chairperson for our school's annual Costume Party. I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out what to be this year. So, I am asking for help from the largest group of creative people I know!!! Here are some of the things to keep in mind:

I'll be moving around a lot (bending down, moving things) I'm not a small person (average size costumes are too small) It can't be scary or above a "G" rating (Elementary school) I'd like to be something out of the ordinary (not a ghost or witch)

I was thinking Princess Fiona from Shrek....but I'm just not so sure I want to be green all night...yes, the ogre form of Princess Fiona. After all, she's plus-size!!

So...can you help!??! I have to start thinking about it now, so that I can make it - and get costumes for the rest of the family as well - before 10/27 which is the date of our party...

Thank you!!! Sue in Ithaca

Personally -- I think Fiona is a wonderful idea!

Or how about Professor Pomona Sprout (from Harry Potter Fame -- the Herbology (plant) teacher

Or maybe Mrs. Zuckerman (the farm wife... of Charlotte's Web fame)

What are some of your children's favorite books? Look for characters from there!

Several years ago I found a really fun costume. I was a cellular phone. When you hit the send button, there was a squawk box in there that sounded like a real phone ringing. I wore it to a Purim service and when my son who was sitting on my lap would move, the phone would ring. The Rabbi thought someone was being really rude having their cell phone on until he realized it was ME who was ringing. All the kids had a ball coming up to me and pushing the button.

We had big fun with a costume idea that came from the group. It was a 'cereal killer'. Simply - variety packs of cereal attached to whatever garment feels good by any manner that works. Each pack was slashed with a plastic spoon poking out. Every age enjoyed the getup. Polly

I wouldn't wanna be green all night either, but you don't have to be green to be a princess, or a queen. A nice Italian Ren. outfit or something from the middle ages would work, and the costume patterns are available in nearly all fabric stores.

Discussion of various commercial costume patterns.

Sue, I say Grandma....I have a Grandma mask and one year Alan and I won first prize and he went as Grandpa. I had a walker....he had a cane. We bought our clothes in a thrift shop...that was fun. Our masks were bought in a custume shop....if you email me I will show you the mask...I wore it last year handing out candy. So may afraid to come to the door...hehehehe! I have a pic of me holding my friend's son Chandler....now this year I am pretty bald with maybe 1/8 inch of hair....I love to see the kids come. I am not sure what to dress as at home. I thought of a baby?? I have baby hair now and could buy or steal a depend frommy mom's nursing home...what about the chest area...maybe baby doll PJ's....we have so much funn on Halloween. I would love to see pictures. Pami

How about the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella? You could put a cute little sign on your back that says Bibbity Bobbity BOO and carry around a pumpkin with wheels on it so it looks sort of like the carriage. And you'd be *very* comfy in the nice loose pearl gray robe the FGM wore. And don't forget her wand -- useful for poking kids who get a bit too fractious at the costume party -- LOLOL! Easy, cheap ideas:

--Pile of junk mail/stress mail--staple or stitch bills, parking tickets, overdue slips, political mail, junk flyers, etc. to a T-shirt and jeans.

A variation on this might be to make a wearable-sized purse or tote out of cardboard and stick on a bunch of stuff and go as a spilled purse--keys, lipstick, photos, receipts, small change, crumpled tissue, fabric swatches, post-it's.

--Sick Day--Bathrobe, slippers, messy hair, ice pack, box of tissues, rouged nose so it looks red, etc.

--Refrigerator--get a bix box, spray paint white, decorate with magnets, memos, shopping lists, recipes, etc.

--Walking wounded--ripped sports jersey, bandages, splints, ice bag, makeup bruises and scrapes. Bonus points for toting a trophy, signed game ball, or crutches.

--Romance novelist--flowing caftan, big hair, lots of makeup, rhinestone glasses (heart shaped, if you can find them), heart jewelry, tote bag with novels, chocolates, and a very tiny dog. A feather boa or a big plume pen adds a nice touch.

--Spaghetti accident--red tee or sweatshirt and sweats, sewn with brown meatball pom-poms and long mop-string or rug yarn spagetti. Hand more spaghettis from a colander and wear as a hat. (I saw this on a four year old and it was precious. No reason it wouldn't also be cute on an adult.)

--Biohazard--lab coat, "nerd glasses," pocket full of pens, long rubber gloves, beaker or flask full of something deadly looking. If you can get your hands on a full-face shield mask, so much the better. A name tag or a biohazard log on the coat is good, too.

Sounds like fun! Monique

As librarian in an elementary school, my friend put on comfortable red sweats and pinned cards all over that said things like "the sky is green", "up is down", "I am a man" (she wasn't). Her costume was a Lie-berry -- as the primary kids pronounced Library :-)

Hi Sue, Here's an easy and very comfortalbe costume. Black tights, black top (long-sleeved t-shirt or turtleneck), black knit cap with felt ears pinned in, and red velveteen shorts with BIG white buttons.( Make the shorts as baggy as you like) Finish your costume with a braided yarn tail, white cotton work gloves and a mouse nose and whiskers painted on with eyebrow pencil.

WooHoo You're Mickey Mouse.

You can "warm" up this costume if your weather tends to be very cold at Hallowe'en. Heavy tights or black knit pants. Make the shorts from fleece and the top can be a wool sweater. White knit gloves will keep your hands warm.

This is a great costume for little kids, too. Keeps them warm and there's nothing to obstruct their vision. Let us know what you decide. Morag in Detroit

I once attended one of these parties as a crayon. I imitated the Crayola look. Tube of felt, with holes cut for your arms and something to serve as straps over your shoulders. Pointy hat with a band around it. Very simple to do and quite comfy. Just wear a black shirt and black tights underneath. If you search, you will find dozens of hits for this on the internet, but I found it difficult to locate a picture for you. This is close: >

but looks a bit more complex than what I did.

Along those same lines and just as easy to make -- a tube of toothpaste.

Cuuuuuuute. I'm thinking I want a costume that people don't have to ask "What are you?" Unfortunately, I think there will be people doing that no matter what I choose. :(

Lego is easy to do too: large cardboard box with 6 holes cut in the front, 6 in the back. push 6 margarine tubs [bottom out] from inside through the front, 6 margarine tubs [no lids, insides facing out] inserted in the "back". Duct tape to hold margarine tubs. Spray paint the whole thing a primary colour. Open at the bottom, duct tape for shoulder straps to hold it on, wear black or primary coloured leggings.

With a cute little black wig and matching coloured top you could be one of those cute little leggo people!
