OT - one irresponsible student

I interview high school students applying to my alma mater and, in almost 10 years, ALL of them have been responsive and prompt (okay, one was late, but he apologized profusely). Now, I have one student who was supposed to come by on Wednesday night and she did not show up. I emailed her that night, just asking if she wanted to reschedule. She finally emailed me this morning with this message: "my bad! I got the days mixed up".

Sheesh! I am actually not even interviewing this season because I can't guarantee that I have one quiet hour per student! Someone at the admissions office has been giving out my name, so I have to, because I'm already the second or third alum that the student has contacted, so I do respond, and I'm happy to do so. BUT, surely she could have made her interview time!!!!!

I was the recipient of one of those cutesy-poo "my bad" apologies just once. I won't tell you that it made me so angry that my hair caught on fire; it was much worse. It took us days and lots of dollars to correct a mistake she had made and her indifference topped-off by her Barbie doll apology was unacceptable. Try to never ever say, "my bad" in front of me. Termination will be inevitable. Polly

Where does that saying come from? I have been hearing it more and more lately and I was just asking Brian the other day is it from a movie, music, celebrity or what? It is really starting to get to me as well. I even had it in an email at work the other day, GRRR!!

The first recollection I have of the phrase is from sports. It's a quick way for an athlete to apologize to a teammate for a missed play of some sort. It often has a chest thump with it...."thump, I made a boo boo. So sorry." takes too long. "thump, my bad" is quicker. KJ

I don't mind so much if it's in popular use, but I don't considerate it appropriate for missing a college interview.

We surely missed all of you while you were Houstoning but let me assure you that we did not cheat on our fabric diets, minded our manners, saved all of the chocolate for you and were extremely well-behaved. =) Polly

I hope you straightened her out!

You would be doing her a favour to get it into her tiny little brain that this is NOT acceptable. If you don't she will only find out the hard way some time soon.

There was one of the Star Wars episodes that had a dorky looking, floppy eared alien who attached himself to the heros - he talked funny and one of the things he always said was "my bad" because he was always making mistakes. I had a teenage male piano student who began saying "my bad" when the movie came out (he was also one of those who waited until midnight of the opening night to be the first to see the movie). I believe that's where the saying originated.

I considered this, but did not do so because students are nervous enough dealing with the college interviewer... On the other hand, having finally met her and talked to her, she does need some kind of guidance.
