OT - PA flooding

I think Polly's rain has settled into Pennsylvania! We now have over 100 roads closed, including Interstate highways, schools closed, 4 deaths, evacuations, people loading moving vans along the river in Harrisburg...getting their stuff out before the river hits a record high level! Pictures on the local news are unbelievable! Everyone has been advised to stay home....sounds like an all-day quilting day! We're praying the rain stops, but the weather forecasts call for more over the next several days. Some places have had so much rain, the weather channel can't even chart it...the charts go to 10"!

We're not quite that bad here yet. The Delaware River is expected to flood later this afternoon or tomorrow. We're fairly high from that but it still creates major issues here. One bridge nearby is still closed after being hit with debris last week. The small creek behind our house was starting to rise yesterday but seems to have subsided a bit. During Irene we had water up to DH's hip from that little creek! Dogs could swim in the back yard. The house was fine but the business flooded with 6-8 in. of water. Hopefully this is not going to be quite as bad.

Here's to everyone staying safe. If the powers that be tell you to leave - DO IT!

We went through the flood watch last weekend, all the way from up here. We have friends in Vermont and we also have a Time Share in Wilmington. Sad to say, we found video on-line Monday night showing the whole town flooded and about three feet of rushing water in the road in front of the Inn. Structurally the building is okay but the entire below road level will need to be gutted and fixed, wiring redone as well as the phone system replaced. All the landscaping and gazebo from last year are now gone as well. We feel helpless being so far away when they are asking for room owner's and others to help with the clean-up. The whole town is just devastated.

Now this weekend we are keeping our eyes out for our family in Montrose, PA. One sister and family might get flooded out but hopefully others will only have to deal with water in basements if that. Alice, hoping you are able to stay high and dry. Be Safe.

Steven, Assuming you mean Wilmington, NC???? Didn't think they got hit that hard. Sorry to hear of both the devastation as well as your part in the repairs. Sorry to say I'm not familiar with and didn't look up Montrose, PA but hope your family are safe and sound. Keep us posted.

It seems that the local streams are now back in their banks, but the rivers and larger creeks are still rising! Roads have been destroyed, and a mid-1800's covered bridge was swept away. Some rivers won't crest until Friday night or Saturday morning....highest levels since hurricane Agnes in

1972!

We're supposed to go to the Penn State vs. Alabama game on Saturday. Right now, there's no way to get there from here!! Even the Pennsylvania Turnpike is flooded and closed, as well as many other interstate highways. Parking in the grass fields will be extremely limited....shuttles from "outlying areas" (whatever that means) will be provided. They are asking RV owners who usually park on the grass, not to bring the RV's. My DH is a diehard fan. He'll find a way to get us there, although I'd rather just watch the game on TV!

No, actually Wilmington, VT. It's on Highway 9 which runs east/west along the southern border of VT from Brattleboro over to New York and Albany. Many of the still pictures that we saw on the news of guard rail hanging in the air were along that route. Have driven it many times. Bert's sister and her husband do have a vacation trailer in NC but not sure where. They live in CT so could have been hit in both places from Irene.

Montrose is in the NE part of the state of PA. Only about a hour on country roads from Binghamton, NY. Two brothers and a sister are on higher ground but could get some run-off. Another sister is in a low area and there is a stream out back. That is the main worry.

Just so many friends here and family and others to worry about. A rather unsettling time.

Ohhhh, how I hope and pray that everybody is using their best judgment and staying as safe as they can. Seems like there's always somebody getting stressed and just not being as careful as maybe they could have. Stuff is just stuff and not worth losing a life over. When the ground is soaked, trees fall. Moving sharp and filthy debris can kill you with a bad cut and there's no way for help to come if the roads and bridges are out. I didn't mean to get on a podium and preach; I just want everybody to be all right. We hold all in harm's way close. Polly

We were in Canada (Ottawa) over the weekend and spent some time with friends from VT. They personally had no issues/damage but were certainly concerned for their fellow residents. And I'm not sure specifically where they are in VT. We drove home Mon. through Binghamton, NY and PA. Little did we know at the time it was the remnants of Lee and it was only going to get worse.

My family in CT was without power for the better part of a week. Fortunately for my Dad it was only a couple of days but Sis and Bro were 5 and 7 days respectively. My Bro is NC (near Raleigh) had no issues and friends are leaving this Sat. for Outer Banks so at least their rental made it through with no issues.

Here, we have more local evacuations, the Delaware River is expected to crest late today or tomorrow AM. We have numerous bridges between NJ & PA that are either gone or closed due to damage. Roadways are closed due to erosion from the river. Local small bridges over normally ankle-deep creeks are damaged/gone and roads are closed everywhere here as well. One of those creeks behind our house turned into a lake during Irene. Saw a news report from Phila. yesterday that one poor woman had left her home at 7:10AM and at 9:45AM had gone

5 miles. I think I would have just left the car and started walking back home!

Here's hoping your family, friends and everyone's property survives with minimal upset/damage.
