OT: play mats

I plan to make some play mats for my grandsons. I have fabric that is printed with streets and buildings they can use with their little cars and Lego creations. My question is how to make it sturdy enough to use on top of looped carpeting. I have some muslin to put on the back, and some fusible interfacing. I don't think batting would be a good idea, but wonder if I need something else in there. Any ideas? thanks, Linda

How about sail cloth, or a light canvas? If I were rummaging around at my house and not wanting to go out shopping, I would probably add one of those table cloths they sell for picnics and kitchen tables -- with plastic on the top and flannel on the back.

I usually just do them with batting, quilt fabric backing and quilt around the streets and landing strips and such. The very oldest one has here a prequilted fabric backing. They are all used a bunch and a fun gift. Taria

I made one for my grandson and used a kids curtain/pillow weight fabric

- heavier than quilting, but not full upholstery weight. I wrote up the instructions on Instructables
