OT Sad Christmas

Our son called last night to tell us the apartment next door caught on fire and spread to all apartments. They lost everything, but Thank God, they got out alive. They drove more than 30 minutes and are sale at our SC house, but they don't have clothes or anything. We are 9 hours away. Barbara in Florida

How very sad, Bobbie. Thank God they were able to reach safety. After the shock wears off, they will have an uphill climb to establish a new normality. I hope they get good help. Pat on the green

Thank you Pat. I talked to him a little while ago and he said the Red Cross put the apartment dwellers up in a small local motel overnight. He said they would go to my house when they leave there. Hopefully the Salvation Army will help out with clothes and other items. So sad the children lost all their gifts, as well as the parent's possessions, and clothes. Where they live the temperature is 29/45. Son said he did not think anything could be salvaged. Hope everyone out there is safe and warm! Barbara in Florida

It's just how I was raised, I guess, but I can count on one hand how many times I've even 'been' in an apartment. They scare the stuffing out of me since you must hope the occupants of the other apartments have good sense and use it. Praise God that your son and his family are out of danger and safe. They didn't 'lost everything'. They just lost their stuff. Stuff can be replaced. Especially at Christmas, my heart squeezes and warms remembering when Katrina took all our children's "stuff" and one of the most hurting was that their collection of Christmas ornaments was washed away. One of the very most beautiful of this precious group's hugs was their showering our children with Christmas ornaments: elegant, aged, new, primitive and loved. Bobbie, I know you hurt for your children. We hurt with you and hold you all close in our hearts. First, we will be thankful that they are all safe. Next, we'll hug them with stuff. Polly

That is tragic. I am glad they are safe but what a terrible thing. Hope there is insurance to help and they get on their feet as easy as possible. Hugs, Taria

Thank you Polly. We have a close friend who lives with us to took some $$$ to my son to buy them the absolute basics, underwear and warm clothes. DGD and DIL walk out of the apartment wearing night clothes. Son was still dressed and working with the computer after 11 PM when the smoke alarm went off. Temp was freezing and someone threw DGD a coat. Dil grabbed her coat & purse. Son grabbed his computer because he uses it at work. They will be living at our house through March. Maybe that will give them time to save money for their own next home. Thanks for caring! Barbara

No insurance, so they are relying on Red Cross and Salvation Army. They will be living at my house for a few months. They lost 3 TV's, 3 computers, and 3 nice sewing machines. Yes, I still have another "extra" SM I will give them : ) Thanks for caring! Barbara

so sorry to read this. hopefully they will be able to salvage something after they are allowed in. we had to wash all clothing for our DS, DIL, and unborn baby one year. they lost all upholstered furniture and beds but most of the other stuff would be washed and aired outside and saved.

They managed to find an old family iron frying pan that has been in the family more than 100 years. I'm glad they found it. Everything else is ashes. Thanks Mary! Barbara
