OT Snow

I rather expect it to snow where I live, just not in the middle of October! It snowed all last night and most of today, quite heavily in fact. Fortunately the ground was warm enough that it didn't stick. Most of the flowers that are still blooming seem to have taken it in stride. I hope we don't get another snowy Halloween, that is hard on the kids.

NightMist very glad to be far enough south of Buffalo that I didn't have to shovel.

DH was telling me that some of you all had 23" of snow. I thought "in October? Good grief". Is this a foreboding of a hard winter coming? Polly

Same here -- Friday I was sitting and sewing and the snow was so thick in the air outside my window I couldn't see the street! Didn't last on the ground yet -- but boy was snow in the air!

Gosh, the weather is screwed up everywhere on this ol' planet. In Australia, southern states had the warmest couple of days in October for a 100 years. Nearly topped a 100degF - like the snow in Michigan, the heat here is so unseasonable it is frightening. I did read today that the hurricane season in the US was much less intense this year, which after Katrina, must have been gratefully received.

Yep. Up in Buffalo they had a devil of a time. 2+ feet, and they were still doing the pre-winter maintenance on the dedicated plows and the trucks were still on leaf pick up duty so they didn't have the plows attached yet. Big power outage and everything. They even had to shut down the thruway between here and there.

The weather has been so wierd the past few years nobody dares guess how bad winter will be anymore. We had an awfully late spring here, an early winter would just put the topper on some of the farmers.

YUK! and here we are having warm spring like weather - too weird for October to see the leaves falling while it's t-shirt warm

Just a little while ago (couple of hours) I saw a hawthorn tree with deep red berries, new shoots, and blossom! No global warming? Well, something's up! . In message , Jessamy writes

Wow, that's...impressive? I can't think of another thing to call it. It must look like one of those naturalists' watercolors from the 18th century when they were trying to catalog everything in the Americas. Weather here has gotten cool earlier than it has in a long time. I always joke that in north Florida August always lasts until Thanksgiving. Cooler air has been here almost constantly for the past month. It isn't until about now (mid Oct) that you can feel a difference. I can't say that I mind. I love this cooler air. I'm just curious to see what winter will be like. Will we have a *real* winter this year?

Debi, we've had some weird weather here, too. Keep in mind that I'm in a

*desert* -- but we had a dilly of a storm Friday night and Saturday morning. It poured with rain, lightning and thunder terrified poor Dexter, and I ran around unplugging everything I could reach -- especially my sewing machine and my Mac. Saturday morning, around 7:30, the hail began; when it stopped my whole neighborhood looked like it had been snowing! And the hail didn't melt for hours -- in fact, I still have patches of it in shady spots around the garden. And this in October! I've never seen anything like it.

Tis due to a 'mild' El Nino. An Old-timer in Mi reminded us of this happening in 1997. EARLY wet cold snow in the start of Oct then a very mild winter for them. It will be 'wetter than normal' for the SW and warmer than normal for the rest of the US. He's expecting the same thing this year.

Wonder how the 'local' Snowbirds knew this as they were commenting at Mayo Clinic that the Snowbirds were early this year.........sumpin to do 'bout' the bones of the elderly....... they are better forecasters than the highly paid Weatherppl :)

Sandy...wow. Crazy weather indeed! We get hail here every once in awhile, usually associated with thunderstorms. While I wouldn't mind a little more water on my garden, even though it's winding down for the year, I'm not willing to endure hail if I don't have to. No garage, y' see, poor vehicles would take the brunt. The Ugly Blue Truck would probably only gain character, rusty and primer spotted as it is, but the car is only a few years old... I'm not ready for dents!

It was 100F on Wednesday with gale force hot north winds, hottest Oct day since 1914. Last night we had another frost.

So much for my struggling little veggie garden!

I know just what you mean, Debi. Several years ago, DH's truck sustained major body damage in a bad hailstorm in Arizona. Yesterday he had my car out to go officiate a high school football game, and I did worry about damage. Luckily, though, neither my car nor his current truck had any damage; I guess the hailstones were either too small or didn't hit hard enough. Whew!

LOL - at least you *have* your vegie garden! Some of us are running a bit behind schedule.

Had to reef out a heap of mondo grass last weekend as it was *dividing and conquering* and strangling my glorious phlax (sp?) plants. Filled the garden waste bin and dumped the rest in last years vegie garden. Filled the bin again this week and there's still more! Perhps I should have been more prepared? In a couple of weeks I'll be ready to plant.

What's that saying? Better late than never.....

Tomatoes are flowering and strawberries (well one anyway) are turning red, peas and beans are coming up nicely. New compost bin is 3/4 filled...... both sides too. Pea Straw has been placed over the sawdust, all that mulch should keep the moisture in now.

No we aren't normally this organised.

My beautiful tomatoes and capsicums have all shrivelled and turned black ((sob, snivel))

I just lost my THIRD planting to a combination of frost (-5C) and heat (+38F with hot north winds) within 48 hours. IF I replant AGAIN these will be the most expensive vegetables in town lol
