OT: why can't family visits ever just be easy......

My MIL and FIL are here for my youngest son's high school graduation which was last night. Wow, it was great. Then today......

We went to dinner all together and came back to our house for a movie night. My FIL, who is 88, walked onto our back deck and, somehow, did a faceplant flat out onto the hardwood deck floor.

He's on Cumidin. Blood everywhere. A big gash on his forehead, his nose was crushed, his hearing aids dug divots out of his ears. We called the paramedics. They suggested he head to the hospital for a CT of his head, etc because of he Cumidin. All the family except me is at the hospital with him. I'm home.

I don't know what to say. My poor MIL. I love her so much. She is the best MIL anyone ever had. And now she can't go into her sewing room ad sew anymore because FIL can't stand her to be out of his sight and he won't go read or anything where she can sew.

Well, just needed to toss it out. You guys are the best. You give me advice, listen to me moan, give me wonderful laughs and inspiration with gorgeous work that I look at and think "oh if I could only ever do that". Thank you for listening to this latest moan. Send good wishes, please, that I find time soon to read my new QNM and get back to my sewing room.

Hugs to all and hope your families are healthy, safe and sane, Sunny

I feel for you. Can you suggest to your MIL that she take a small table into the room here he sits so she can put her machine on and sew where he can see her?

Oh, Sunny, I can certainly sympathize with you!

Perhaps your DMIL has space for a TV or radio/reading chair and lamp in her sewing room? Or can she set up an area of where DFIL likes to be, where she can sew? [have her sewing room/supply area separate]

Is there family nearby who could visit with DFIL to give DMIL a chance to sew? Perhaps get him involved in some activity so he can focus on something besides where DMIL is?

Oh Sunny, your poor FIL! My dad was on Coumadin (sp?) and kept right on working... in construction. He seemed to do fine. Even without the blood thinner, what he did sounds really painful. Here's a profound wish for his swift and full recovery. Give him a big hug from me, veteran of a horribly broken nose many years ago. I can sympathize with that part, oh so well.

Oh, Sunny, how awful! I hope your FIL is feeling better soon and that your MIL gets some time to do what she needs to do.

What a terrible thing to happen. DH is on coumadin, and so far no major bleeding problems. Maybe your MIL could get one of the small Janome machines and a small table to use in the room with your FIL. Kind thoughts coming your way.

I hope he'll be ok. Do suggest that she could move the sewing machine to his favorite room. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Michelle, it's not upsetting .... my FIL is 88. He has prostate cancer and some other physical problems. He has taken several falls lately, apparently. All involve the same situation as this fall -- a small step down from one level to another. He just doesn't "see" the step. Or if he sees it, his balance doesn't negotiate the step. Anyway... he's feeling better. The bruising looks terrible, but the CT scan showed no damage inside his head and apparently no broken bones. But I would have sworn his nose is broken.

(((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))

Get your MIL to install a nice comfy cosy chair in the sewing room where he can sit and chat/read/play pc while she sews.

Sunny, your FIL and MIL are in my prayers. My FIL who will be 88 in Nov. lives with us and has fallen twice, collapsed once and hospitalized with shingles. I know how scary it is and I hope that he is fine.
