OT: window blinds

I would like to take advantage of the vast pool of knowledge of this group. I need to get new blinds for my sunroom, and would like your opinions about vertical blinds and horizontal wood blinds. Privacy is not the issue. I need something I can close during the day when I'm gone, to keep the sun out, but able to be opened to enjoy the view when I'm home. Right now I have verticals, but I'm considering wood blinds. Are the horizontal blinds hard to keep clean? Any other pros or cons about either? Any other styles I should consider? Thanks, Linda in Ohio

I end up washing the horizontal blinds at least twice a year, maybe more. I don't need to wash the vertical blinds except to dust them with the vacuum occasionally. In my opinion, verticals are less work. Barbara in HOT SC

I agree with the verticals. Easier to clean. If you do decide to go horizontal, I have both wood "plantation" blinds and the small metal mini-blinds in various rooms. The wood ones are awful to clean, heavy to raise and lower, real dust-collectors. The small white metal -- about 1/2 inch wide -- mini-blinds are great. Very easy to wipe clean and keep straight. Very light-weight yet the filter sun very well. For a door wall or wide window, I do like the verticals. Mine are heavy, coated vinyl with an etched pattern which looks like cloth. Great for insulating both cold and sun out. And easy to vacuum.

I grew up with a houseful of horizontal wooden blinds. Well . . . I didn't grow all that much and the blinds just could be what stunted my growth. They really are good looking. Horizontals are a constant chore. IMHO, of course. We have heavy vinyl verticals installed in almost every window. We unclip the blades and wipe them with 409 during spring cleaning. I enjoy seeing beautiful window 'treatments' but I just don't want any to take care of. I'd rather be quilting. Polly

WE redid the loving room last August & I opted for roman shades from Lowe's. I LOVE them. I just vacuum them off when I do the floors. These have a sheer layer that you can leave down after raising the main layer. they filter the light nicely. I really like them. (Did I say that again) When we redo the bedroom, I'm getting insulated(sp?) ones for in there.

I looked at this thread and wondered if it was that someone had tried the ones in the book "Pieced Roman Shades" by Terrell Sunderman. They look awesome, and I have them down on my slop chit to use in the rooms that need blinds.

I would never have horizontals in a house again, after I cut myself badly on one trying to clean it. Verticals are a pain in the wind. (:p) Have you thought of external shutters? They are decorative, insulating, secure, out of the way and can be hosed clean. And you can open windows behind them, and they still keep out the glare and are secure.

Think French and Italian Provincial...

A thought...
