OT: Witch costume

Dear All,

I've got to dress myself up as a witch for a kids birthday party (7 yo) - the girl called herself to ask if I could please come help her mother out at the party :-) And yes, her mother was in on this, just busy doing something else in the background!

Anyway, I believe I have a long black skirt lurking somewhere. But what else? I'm thinking Hogwarts style, rather than wise lady getting drowned for playing doc. I don't have a lot of time, but could do something - maybe some sort of decoration on a black t-shirt? And what about hair (fairly short, totally straight), hat, face?

Any ideas?

Thanks Hanne in DK

Definitely face paint. Red lipstick. Wart made with tissues, flour and water paste with a couple of toothbrush bristles/ false eyelashes stuck in it.

A cloak made out of an old black or red curtain, or an academic gown if you happen to have one.

Besom broomstick made from a mop, some twigs and string. Magic wand: chopstick painted.

striped socks, over the knee and held up with ribbon or twine

black high heeled shoes (or scarlet with glittter stuck on with water)

fingerless gloves, again striped if you can. You could always 'paint' the stripes.

hat: cone and brim is classic, but rat-tailed hair, held together with your 'wand' would do. Flour will 'grey' it nicely. loads of hairspry and pull it apart so it fluffs.

T-shirt tucked into your skirt with a leather workman's belt with 'pockets' filled with liquorice bootlaces, gobstoppers, sugar mice and those red laces. Oh and one pouch with flour and glitter in it to sprinkle as 'magic dust'.

That do for starters. oh, and nothing must match, of course.

Ooooh you're good Nel. Can I use you as a consultant next time I have to go to a costume party?? I am so terrible at coming up with ideas.

Excellent, there is more than enough for me to go to work on here - some of it may not be so easy to fix, but some of it definitely will be. If I still have those black boots I wanted to trash, this will be the chance!

The mother called me this afternoon - she had just picked up some $3 black fleece blankets at IKEA for use as capes. One size fits all, just cut a hole for the head :-)

Since the kids don't know me (other than the birthday girl), I get to be the chief witch, the kids all have to do some tasks to collect ingredients for the potion which I'll be cooking in a big black cauldron (really, they got one!) over a fire. Yes, we have a safe place to do all of this with a bunch of kids. It's going to be a lot of fun!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hanne in DK - where it is a toss-up as to wether I need the fleece, a t-shirt or rainsuit...

Used to do costumes for school plays. Old habits die hard.

Thank you for your kind words...

True Nature will out!

Oops!

Nel (Gadget Queen) and old witch, obviously!

Wow, these are great suggestions. I also always thought a plastic spider either in your hair or dangling off your cat with monofilament was a nice touch.
