Paper Pieced Spiderweb Blocks

Hi Guys, I'm not sure who it was that posted a link to this block but I want to thank that person. I would also like to strangle her now that I have removed the paper from several of the blocks LOLOL. I think the pattern is it at http://www.quilters cache.com ) but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's a very easy PP block and is making up quite nicely! This quilt will be for my DSis to give her best friend (Carla) as an anniversary gift. Carla loves horses (she has a large piece of property in Austin and has several horses) so I got some horse fabric to use. Best part is that most of the fabric is from my stash since the spider webs are supposed to be scrappy. The pattern calls for the "background" fabric to be white but I don't have enough in my stash and white shows the dirt too easily. I'm using tone on tone cream fabrics and putting the blocks together so that the four pieces that make up a piece of the background are all the same cream fabric. This is going to be a lap quilt but Carla is a big woman -- very tall and a bit on the heavy side. I'm going to make the spider web part about 42" x 60" and then add at least one border. The picture with the block pattern has a border of 6" x ? rectangular pieces and I like the looks of it so will probably go with that. By the time I am finished, I will be very tired of paper piecing AND removing the paper :-). I thought about getting either the very thin easy tear stuff or the stuff that dissolves in water. Then I realized how much $$ that would cost and am going with the standard el cheapo white paper and using a very small stitch length! Once I am finished, I will be sure to add some photos to Webshots. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

If you score the paper, along each seam, with the back of a stitch ripper (along a ruler edge); and then pull gently on the bias, the paper will almost fall off, cleanly and quickly. . In message , Tia Mary writes

I do that and it helps but it's still a time consuming, tedious job. Well worth the effort, of course but still a P.I.T.A. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Well, so far I only have a hand full of blocks. When I get a few more, I will lay them out and take a photo. It's so rewarding to put the blocks together and actually see the pattern appear. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The best paper I have found is Carol Doak's. It is easy to remove and sturdy enough to use. You can find it at her website, your LQS or many places online.

I agree - I have some of That Patchwork Place's and my printer hates it.

I have some of this -- Santa or the Babies got it for me a few years ago :-). Problem is, when you are making as many blocks as I am, you need a LOT of it and that starts to cost more $$ than I want to spend. I use it when I am doing single PP blocks for {{Quilts}}, etc.

Paper is easily torn out. Not so much a Pita as regular paper.

The best paper i found is kids sketch pads from the dollar store! Table paper is good, but, sometimes needs trimming. and sketch pads are cheaper! amy in CNY

OOO -- you're right and the paper should go through the copier easy enough. I'm just so lazy -- the regular el cheapo white paper is already in the tray of the copier so I just use it. Of course, I'm mad at myself when it come time to be pulling off the teensy little bits along the seam lines -- LOL! A question for those who read this thread. When I get all of the pieces sewn to my foundation paper, I stitch in-between the perimeter cutting line and the sewing line for joining the blocks together. Do others do this? This is where the problem paper bits are. There's barely 1/8 inch of paper that has to be pulled off and it's VERY difficult. I've just finished making one of the large blocks (joining four of the smaller web quadrants) and have a raging headache and some nasty eye strain from taking paper off. Once I get the large blocks together, I take all of the paper off. I've sewn enough clothing with bias seams that I can be careful and not let it get all wonky along the edges. Also, sewing between the cutting & sewing lines helps to keep everything in the proper shape. I'm off the rethink my layout. I'm not sure if I can make 35 of these large (about 12" finished) blocks. There might be several previously unplanned borders on this quilt -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Nope, I do not sew the outside perimeter of the PFP block. And tiny bits of paper caught in the seam threads do NOT need to be removed. My criteria is if the bits of paper are less than 1/4 in. square they can stay. The El Cheapo paper will disintegrate when the quilt is washed and won't leave enough fibers to make any difference.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Literally! ;-)
