Ping Dr. Quilter

I received your request for the Calla Lilies pattern. When I tried to use the "reply" on Yahoo the email to you bounced. I'll send the pattern to you using my other email address and it should go thru just fine.

I've had a couple of messages to you bounce over the last few months too - one an offer of a squishie a long time ago and one a direct reply to an email you sent me about a book (I think it was you - sorry if I'm remembering incorrectly).

Oh my gosh, Lynn! I have such memory troubles with the pain taking over at times and my meds. Please remind me what book it was.... I may well have promised something and not come thru.... or sent it to the wrong person??? YIKES!!! I sure hope I didn't do either..... :-((( I'm sorry.

No no! They were messages to Dr. Quilter and it was nothing earth-shattering.. I think I was just offering a squishie at one point and offering to send a book at another point. No big deal, just pointing it out in case it is a recurring email problem.

Sorry to alarm you! I might have to send you a squishie just to make up for the upset. :)

You know - I guess I'm dense - I don't get all the "no spam" email addy. My outlook express screens all my email and dumps everything according to my personally set filter into my delete file. I dump my delete file once a week. Result: I rarely if ever get any spam. When and if I do get one I just tell my reader to add this address to my blocked list and I never see it again. I've always used my regular email and never had a problem. Just seems like a "no spam" address is just a lot of trouble to me. Can someone dummy it down for me and maybe help me understand why I would need to use this rather than the method I am using?

I don't understand this either Snigs, but then, I don't understand a lot of computer stuff. My DH is really anal about internet privacy and security and he has never requested that I "mung" up or use a fictitious email addy here on this group.

We have SPAM filters too, and I rarely see them, they go directly into a SPAM folder that just gets dumped. Like you, if I get the occassional one through to my email box, I just hit the SPAM button and I never see it again.

Tina, dense too

Good spam filters have reduced the annoyance of spam in your e-mail inbox, but they don't reduce internet traffic. There is software that will go through news groups and websites looking for what looks like an e-mail address. Those addresses are then used to send junk e-mail. If your valid e-mail address isn't out there, then (in theory) you shouldn't be getting any spam. I'm not sure if that really works, because I get plenty of spam. Spam filters are not infallible and sometimes mark something as spam when it isn't. I always look at the subject line and sender's name before I delete something, even something that my spam filter has marked as spam. If I can reduce the amount of spam coming in, I don't have as much to scan before deleting. In any case, I don't open anything if I don't recognize the sender or the subject line.

Well I'll go along as I am until someone shows me the error of my ways.

Well if they found my email address my security software must have taken care of it. I occassionally get mail from a troll but they are pretty easy to recognize by all the foaming at the mouth hate they spew and I just delete them and go on. Must work because I rarely get those. My outlook express allows me to set my security settings so the firewall protects my computer from outside. I hear about others getting these worms and virus' but I have only had one and it was my own fault because I had my security settings too low. My ISP provides my security software and apparently they must be pretty diligent about updates because I get notices that it is updated almost daily. I used Norton until the latest version started conflicting with my other software and causing problems and then I dumped it.

LOL!! Just for the record I didn't mean others were using dumb down email addys - I just needed a simple explanation (dumbed down to my level) about why I should use anything but my "real" email addy. I'm always reading about how emails sent to some here bounce because they aren't using their real addy and wondered why I should bother. I'd vote you !! LOL!

I once posted to a newsgroup with my real addy in the reply... I would get

300-700 emails a day. Yikes. Then the isp started offering antispam software and that too care of 98% of it :) And 50 of my legitimate emails too :( For other reasons I ended up changing my isp's and put a 'nospam' addy in my reply and until a few days ago when I put my addy in the email to get a reply for that dreadful qwyzzle I have not gotten a single spam. I have no antispam on my isp and I get all my emails :) I went from 700 emails a day to almost none... and I never ever use any anti anything software. The other problem was the isp mailboxes would get full.... unless I put my antispam setting on delete, I would not get legitimate emails either as they would bounce..... but if I used the delete feature then I would never see those real emails that the antispam software flagged by accident. I went away for the weekend and came home to 2300+ emails. It took hours to download. But just because the antispam flags and deletes it before it hits your computer doesnt mean it wasn't sent and therefore the isp is dealing with it. 300+ emails a day times X amount of customers is a lot of stuff that server needs togo through. Slows down the connections, especially on the ones that share bandwidth such as cable. Not that this is a reason to use a nospam addy.... but if you ever switch isp's you could try it out for a bit.... sure saves a lot of hassle with all that pesky security stuff (and a lot of money too if you have to buy or subcribe to it all). ymmv

I have Norton anti virus but the spam mail seems to be growing exponentially. My provider stops a small percentage because they send a message saying they've blocked some emails. I've blocked those addresses that still get thru but it's getting out of hand now. How do I set the filters to block all this junk?
